Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Leads the development of detailed analyses covering the strategic and financial evaluation of new investment opportunities, including the preparation of investment memos, summaries and presentations for senior management and the Board of Directors
Leads and assists in long-term strategy development for Sempra and business units. This includes interfacing and collaborating with executive management from both Sempra Corporate and the business units.
Undertakes a variety of activities to source and develop new investment opportunities consistent with Sempra goals and objectives, including market research and intelligence, industry developments, and the maintenance of relationships with internal business units and external bankers, lawyers, consultants and industry participants to communicate business ideas / propositions and solicit feedback on their viability / interest.
Assumes a project-management role in the execution of M&A opportunities, including the coordination of key line and staff teams in carrying out valuation, due diligence, counterparty negotiations and integration activities. Manages communication with decision-makers on deal development
Manages and supervises a team of 2-5 professional staff members, with an emphasis on building analysts' skills in financial and economic modeling, market analysis, energy industry economics and competitive dynamics, and use of industry-standard data sources
Build the capacity of the Corporate Development group by establishing standards, tools and processes to increase efficiency and consistency in the corporate development work product. Includes the standardization and automation of financial models, the creation of memo and presentation templates, development of due diligence workplans.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field required.

Experience:

8+ years prior experience in energy and/or finance within a Fortune 500 company.

Skills and Abilities:

Superior knowledge of corporate finance, valuation and investment analysis and familiarity with related tax and accounting disciplines. Strong excel financial modeling skills with significant experience building both short form and fully dynamic 3 statement models. Broad understanding of the energy sector including various business models, players, and trends.
Excellent project management skills. Maintains proper balance between the need for careful, detail-oriented and essential work versus meeting external and internal deadlines. Efficiently breaks down large projects into manageable tasks that can be delegated to junior staff members.
Strong strategic thinker. Able to quickly understand and characterize key forces at work in Sempra's current and prospective markets, including fundamental supply-demand balances, competitive dynamics, regulatory considerations and inter-BU synergies.
Comfortable and persuasive in dealing with executive-level management. Superior verbal and written communication skills. Able to develop and maintain credibility throughout the organization, especially when disagreeing with business unit leadership and peers. Performs well in a team environment.
"Thought-leadership." Develops novel approaches to understand complex issues at the top of senior management's agenda. Solves difficult problems in a way that yields distinctive insights upon which senior management can make investment and other important decisions.

Other Qualifications

CPA, CFA, MBA credentials highly preferred.
Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
