Overview

The Managing Editor oversees process flow for identified opportunities through production planning and finished products, builds extensive global experience to use judgment to plan projects and accomplish publishing goals, interfaces with all HarperCollins Focus editorial, marketing, and creative team members, as well as shared service areas of the company, to create and update best tools, processes, and practices. Serves as project manager and works with the publisher in assigning projects to editors.

Responsibilities

* Serve the publisher on departmental processes, book production, scheduling, and financial decisions.
* Manage publishing group projects and initiatives/programs as assigned

* Provide early insight, assessing and reporting risks and minimizing exposure to help inform decision making, planning, and execution on departmental processes maximizing opportunities and minimizing challenges

* Develop and document viable production and publishing plans with all key stakeholders

* Serve as project manager, ensuring timely deliverables and accurate key performance indicator status reports are completed.

* Participate in weekly cross-company Managing Editorial Meetings gleaning training and information related to process, systems, and data

* Set up projects/ISBNs with viable production plans

* Execute project plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements to meet or increase budget expectations

* Manage resources across multiple projects, assisting publisher in assigning projects to editors and/or outside vendors

* Assist in facilitating team communication and editorial project meetings effectively

* Ensure project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately

* Keep track of lessons learned

* Communicate relevant project information to leadership effectively. Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely manner, providing first-response, fast-resolution, results-oriented problem solving

* Communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully

* Manage P&L (APL) development, approval, and processing, and facilitate high-advance requests

* Facilitate and track contract request forms (CRF), adhering to approval and process standards

* Build and maintain cross-departmental, business-vertical and service-department relationships and processes for planning, collaboration, and communication

* Create and manage RSuite workflows to ensure effective manuscript flow and task indicators

* Provide early communication for inventory planning and stock needs for marketing and PR opportunities

* Facilitate transitions of HCL titles to POD

* Manage and ensure data integrity

Qualifications

Knowledge: Advanced use of Microsoft office required. High level of proficiency required with Excel spreadsheets. Extensive project management and planning skills.

Work Experience: Minimum 5 years project management experience, work experience in publishing/editorial project management preferred.

Education: Bachelors degree required.

Industry Knowledge: Clear understanding of the publishing industry, editorial practices, and publishing operations preferred.

Skills:

* Quickly learn new software applications and maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies
* Ability to learn and use project management software, Microsoft Project system, MDM, RSuite, Telescope, DocuShare

* Excellent written communication skills

* Proven project management and organizational skills

* Excellent interpersonal skills

* Proven spelling and proofreading skills

* Above average knowledge of English grammar

* Able to distill numerous pieces of information and communicate key points to others
