Position Summary

The Underwriting Senior Specialist is responsible for evaluating Long-Term Care insurance applications with a focus on quality, timeliness, and productivity to determine whether an application should be approved, declined or if additional information is required to evaluate risk when appropriate.  As this is an entry level role the Senior Specialist will receive significant training and oversight from management personnel.  Upon completion of training, Senior Specialists are granted increasing authority to issue or decline cases within assigned limits. Underwriting Senior Specialists predominantly rely on Underwriting Guidelines to evaluate an applicant’s risk classification; however, due to the complexity associated with co-morbid conditions, Senior Specialist may be required to make assessments of applicant risk without relying on specific direction from the Underwriting Guidelines by utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Whether synthesizing the morbidity risk of medical history, family history, or prescription and medical claims data, Senior Specialists are expected to evaluate an applicant’s overall risk profile. 

Responsibilities

Accurately and efficiently classify the morbidity risk for proposed insureds at the appropriate rate class based on both medical and non-medical information including quickly but carefully reading, assessing, and interpreting medical history from phone and in-person assessments, cognitive test scores, and prescription profile results on files without an Attending Physician Statement.

Follow established protocols, underwriting guidelines, and procedures to assess risk, ensuring decisions are consistent with corporate guidelines while maintaining a strong working knowledge of our administrative systems and productivity level established by management.

Develop on-going medical, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Review and evaluate applications and documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills both internally and externally, that includes use of all systems and communication within systems, appropriate wording of letters, professional verbal communication with team members, Agents, Clients, and Field force.

Prepare responses to special circumstance letters to applicants, agents, and medical professionals.

Able to produce high volumes of work with quality results.

Additional administrative duties as assigned by management to assist the team.

Experience

Medical Terminology or medical evaluation experience is preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Strong customer service skills required.

Ability to perform in high stress environment.

Ability to work independently and multi-task efficiently.

Strong organizational skills and good math aptitude

Proficient PC Skills

Time Management Skills

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.

0-2 years work experience is preferred.
