General Duties and Responsibilities
Ensuring the safe operation and navigation of towing vessels along inland waters and western rivers.
Ensuring the safety of crew members.
Standing wheelhouse watches.
Responsible of informing the wheelman on watch all known conditions of the vessel.
The Pilot must report all unsafe conditions to the Captain and take actions to prevent accidents.
Maintaining accurate and continuous communication with management, supervisors, and office personnel.
Completing all required reports for the daily operation and management of the vessel and tows.
Ensuring that all navigation equipment is kept neat, clean, and in good working order, and that routine maintenance work is scheduled and completed.
Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and company laws, policies, and regulations, and reports any violations.
Personally charged with strict adherence to the provisions of the COI, and compliance with the applicable provisions of 46 CFR subchapter M.
Must ensure compliance with the Towing Safety Management System.
Promoting a culture that adheres to “Safety First,” and wears the proper PPE gear when needed.
Performing assigned duties in emergency situations.
Remaining up-to-date with all relevant licenses and certifications.
Regular attendance at the worksite is required.
Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Established leader, able to communicate, organize, and problem solve.
Able to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to fulfill physical requirements including pulling heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items a minimum of 50 pounds, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up.
Able to work with or without direct supervision, both as a member of a team and/or as an individual.
Effective communicator, both written and verbal.
Knows how and when to use the emergency equipment and PPE.
Ability to work overtime as necessary.
Ability to be a positive representative of the Company both internally and externally.
Ability to work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and customers.
Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Experience/Education:
Hold a valid Masters of Towing Vessels endorsed for Inland Waters and Western Rivers.
Hold a valid Radar Endorsement and FCC license.
Hold a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (T.W.I.C.).
High school diploma / GED or equivalent experience is required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in Marine Industry, is required.
Requires a valid driver’s license.
Travel:
Employee is responsible for his/her own transportation to/from the vessel if they live within 75 miles of the vessel location.
