Responsibilities
James F. Butler & Associates, is a large in-house counsel defense firm and Employees of the Law Department, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.
The firm is seeking twelve (12) 2L law interns for its various teams. These internship positions provide strong practical litigation experience in both procedural and substantive legal matters. The internship has a full-time schedule in the summer beginning Monday May 23, 2022 and transitions to a part-time schedule (12 hrs/wk) during the school year. The full-time summer internship will be a hybrid (combination of in-office and remote) opportunity. The law internship concludes in April/May 2023. The ideal candidates should possess excellent organization skills, have an energetic/positive attitude, legal research knowledge and the ability to work well under deadlines in a fast paced working environment. The summer interns selected will also receive an internship stipend.
Interns may be placed on one of the following teams:
Law & Motions Team Intern (3)
The Law and Motions Team is seeking law students who seek to develop their skills in legal analysis and persuasive writing. As an intern, you will be working on the substantive motions handled by the attorneys on the team, including motions for summary judgment motions on liability and damages and appellate work. You will learn how to analyze medical records, expert reports, deposition testimony and other proof, with the goal of developing defense strategies based on factual evidence and relevant case law. You will opportunity to attend court conferences and depositions where that evidence is sought and obtained, as well as oral arguments and trials where that evidence is presented. There is a strong focus on mentorship on the team with the interns receiving substantive feedback and review of all of their written work, as well as one-on-one skills training sessions.
Trial Team Intern (5)
The firm represents clients who are the insured of State Farm Insurance Company in defense of personal injury actions arising from automobile and premise accidents. As a Trial Team intern, you will be assisting the team on different file handling tasks including drafting reports for attorney review, preparing summaries of medical records, legal research and preparing correspondence to the carrier regarding changes in case status. The intern will also be asked to assist the trial team staff with various projects and tasks. The intern will also have the opportunity to attend and observe court appearances with attorneys including trials, arbitrations and depositions in various jurisdictions/venues including Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk and Bronx Counties.
No-Fault Team Intern (3)
In the No-Fault or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) department, the law intern will work collaboratively with a team of in-house experienced attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries to provide legal counsel to State Farm Insurance. The selected candidate will focus on New York No-Fault, which is a fast-paced, high volume, and heavily litigated area of the law. The intern will undergo initial training and then be involved in drafting motions, assisting in preparing arbitration conciliations, conducting research, and attending court and/or arbitration hearings with an attorney.
Arbitration Team Intern (1)
The Arbitration Team handles uninsured motorist claims, underinsured motorist claims and personal injury claims going to binding arbitration (pre-suit) and is seeking an intern to assist in the handling of these claims. The types of claims handled by the Arbitration Team involve issues relating to insurance coverage as well as the standard tort, personal injury issues. There will be opportunities to conduct legal research on insurance coverage issues involving interpretation of policy language, statutes and regulations as well as the applicable case law. The intern will work closely with an attorney to assist in drafting research memos, arbitration briefs, as well as doing summaries of medical records. There will also be opportunities to attend Examinations Under Oath, arbitration hearings and court appearances (motions, framed issue hearings, etc.). The Arbitration Team handles litigation in seven (7) different downstate counties so the intern will have an opportunity to get a feel for civil practice in different counties.
Qualifications
Current enrollment in an ABA accredited Law School program and remain enrolled for the duration of the internship
2L students and a minimum 3.0 GPA preferred
Strong research skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
