Job Summary
The Nuclear Station Procedures group at Millstone Power Station in Waterford, CT is seeking an entry or mid-level Nuclear Mechanical Maintenance/Technical Procedures Writer.
The position will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
NUCLEAR PROCEDURES WRITER I: Applies mechanical maintenance or related technical knowledge to create, maintain or revise work standards, instructions and procedures which support equipment maintenance and repair, nuclear plant operations, programs, and work practices. Evaluates feasibility of requested or proposed changes, and analyzes documents as to their applicability to mechanical maintenance or related technical procedures. Researches technical manuals, vendor specifications, plant diagrams, design documents, station policies and regulatory requirements to obtain additional information and ensure the safe operation of equipment, procedure flow and workability, and adherence to regulatory requirements and writer guidelines. Researches commitments with regulatory agencies that may impact new or existing procedures. Performs plant walkdowns as needed, using observation findings, reviews, assesses, develops, and maintains human factors, standards, procedures, and aids for technical and administrative procedures. With guidance, coordinates the review, comment resolution, and approval of procedures with user departments and management. Evaluates and researches proposed changes to procedures and standards based upon human factors principles to ensure compliance with company and regulatory guidelines and requirements. May assist in the development of training modules required to implement-approved standards and procedures. This is the entry level in the Nuclear Procedure Writer series; majority of work is routine in nature, with general guidance provided by more experienced staff.
NUCLEAR PROCEDURES WRITER II: This fully functional level applies mechanical maintenance or related technical knowledge to create, maintain or revise work standards and procedures which support equipment maintenance and repair, nuclear plant operations, programs, and work practices. Evaluates the feasibility of requested or proposed changes, and analyzes documents as to their applicability to mechanical maintenance or related technical procedures. Researches technical manuals, vendor specifications, plant diagrams, design documents, station policies and regulatory requirements to obtain additional information and ensure the safe operation of equipment, procedure flow and workability, and adherence to regulatory requirements and writer guidelines. Researches commitments with regulatory agencies that may impact new or existing procedures. Performs plant walkdowns as needed, using observation findings, reviews, assesses, develops, and maintains human factors standards, procedures, and aids for technical and administrative procedures. Reviews and approves proposed changes to procedures and standards based upon human factors principles and effectiveness to ensure compliance with company and nuclear regulatory guidelines and requirements, makes recommendations for improvement. Coordinates reviews, comment resolution, and approvals of procedures with user departments and management. Assist in the technical analysis, evaluation, and scope of interdisciplinary procedural problems. Provide technical guidance to less experienced writers and may participate in peer documentation review to ensure procedural consistency. May develop training modules required to implement approved standards and procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Nuclear Procedures Writer I:
One of the following qualifications must be met:
Associate degree in related technical discipline or writing or completion of mechanical maintenance or related technical program plus 2 years of mechanical maintenance or related technical experience or;
Bachelors degree and 0-2 years of mechanical maintenance or related technical experience.
Additional KSAs
Ability to learn to prepare and write descriptive copy using publishing tools and writer guidelines, and to verify documentation, both orally and visually.
Ability to learn procedure writer guide, procedure change process, processing document requirements and effective writing skills. Ability to learn computerized tracking system, work with templates and navigate in control document software as well as to format procedures, write procedure steps and process a procedure change.
Technical skills, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical literature and documents.
Computer and keyboarding skills required.
Nuclear power plant experience is a plus.
Nuclear Procedures Writer II:
One of the following qualifications must be met:
Associate degree in related technical discipline or writing or completion of mechanical maintenance or related technical program plus 5+ years of mechanical maintenance or related technical experience or;
Bachelors degree and 3-4 years of mechanical maintenance or related technical experience.
Additional KSAs
Previous work experience preparing and writing descriptive copy using publishing tools and writer guidelines, and verifying documentation, both orally and visually.
Knowledge of procedure change process, processing document requirements and effective writing skills and the ability to format procedures, write procedure steps and process a procedure change.
Ability to use personal computer, computerized tracking system, working with templates and navigate in control document software.
Knowledge of Human Factors in Design of Procedures, syntax and vocabulary, conditional statements, and cross references.
Knowledge of drafting and validating procedures, knowledge of evaluating and controlling procedures.
The ability to produce a high-quality document with numerical information, lists, tables and graphics and create a procedure from basic information.
Technical thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical literature and documents.
Skilled in prioritizing work assignments and responding to craft or departmental questions to communicate and/or determine impact of changes on procedures and effectively provide feedback to operational/work units.
Nuclear power plant experience is a plus.
Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above are encouraged to apply.

A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will count as one year toward the year of experience.
