Job Overview/Summary
Reporting to a Director of Legal, this role is responsible for managing a variety of U.S. civil litigation matters, including product liability, personal injury, class actions, intellectual property, and commercial disputes. The role will handle various types of subpoena responses and may assist in supporting international litigation, arbitration matters, and internal investigations. This position will be responsible for formulating and actively driving strategies for the resolution of complex, high-value litigation, and managing outside counsel to achieve cost-effective results. The role will also support the evaluation and implementation of legal technology solutions. The position will coordinate extensively with attorneys within Legal Services, business and functional partners, and other executives within Clorox.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a wide variety of U.S. civil litigation matters, including product liability, personal injury, class actions, intellectual property, and commercial disputes.
* Manage and oversee company investigations and responses related to third-party subpoenas.
* Assist with the analysis and pursuit of affirmative claims involving indemnification, antitrust, and other theories of recovery.
* Responsible for preparation of discovery, review of pleadings, and formulation of case strategy. Provide direction and oversight on electronic discovery collection, holds, and compliance.
* Responsible for preparing witnesses for deposition and occasionally defending depositions.
* Review and advise on claims and potential disputes, including contractual disputes.
* Provide direction to business partners on accomplishing the business objectives while managing legal risk.
* Provide counsel and develop and conduct legal training for business partners in the areas such as privilege, document creation and retention, and other areas as requested.
* Handle counsel selection, manage outside counsel, coordinate litigation strategy, and manage outside counsel costs.
* Assist in other substantive legal areas and work with members of Legal leadership, other attorneys and staff on departmental matters as needed.
Key Skills, Abilities and Experience Required
Years and Type of Experience:
* At least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney (in-house experience a plus).
* Extensive experience in handling complex civil litigation, including commercial, class action, and product liability, through all phases (pre-trial, trial, appellate, settlement). Experience taking and defending depositions.
* Demonstrated success at providing strategic counseling to business partners that takes into account legal considerations along with business goals.
* Experience interacting at a senior level with business management teams a plus.
* Pro bono experience a plus.

Education Level/Degree:
* JD degree; strong academic background (judicial clerkship or externship a plus)
* Member of the California State Bar, or eligible to register as a California Registered In-House Counsel.
