The mission of the Engineering Manager is to provide R&D leadership for the product line and coordinate a multi-discipline product development team (electrical, mechanical, AME, firmware disciplines). The incumbent will partner with the Laser/DoD cross-functional leadership team to support the delivery of the business revenue and profitability targets included in business Annual Operating Plan and Strategic Plan. They will ensure that projects in the portfolio are properly staffed, efficiently executed and that the technical risks are managed successfully. They will partner with Global R&D discipline leaders to guarantee that discipline best practices are respected, and MIs platform strategy is successfully implemented.
This position will report directly to the Laser/DoD Program Director and dotted line to the Corporate R&D Leadership Chief Engineer.
Principal Activities / Duties / Responsibilities
1. Ensure all R&D aspects of programs are carried out in accordance to MI's processes.
2. Collaborate with the Chief Engineer, Discipline Leaders and Technical project managers roles to define and execute projects to clear scope, on time, on budget and quality.
3. Maintain customer satisfaction at acceptable levels by delivering the proposed value and promptly resolving customer issues which involve Product design.
4. Collaborate with the cross-functional team to make adequate trade-offs between value creation, material cost, serviceability, testability, changeability, etc.
5. Drive quality and efficiency within the embedded software team
6. Be the change management leader and demonstrate value from the agreed upon company-wide initiatives. Promote platform module adoption in Laser/DoD products.
7. Contribute to the development of a solid Laser & DoD product line roadmaps.
8. Build and maintain resource plans of appropriate granularity for the short/medium/long term and, using a skills matrix approach, coach and develop the team accordingly. This should include an active team development plan.
9. Establish/manage relationship with external engineering service partners.
10. Direct R&D personnel from multiple engineering disciplines as an effective team that is committed to organizational goals and fosters collaboration.
11. Collaborate with global R&D disciplines to build/recruit/further adjust the team to meet the needs of our programs
12. Lead software design reviews and drive improvements in design and code quality
13. Ensure that our products meet or exceed applicable regulations & certifications requirements.
14. Ensure that engineering discipline standard, methods and tools are developed with the needs of the programs in mind and effectively deployed.
15. Promote improved quality levels with reliability engineering best practices and Six Sigma methodologies.
16. Monitor operating and capital expense budgets to achieve company objectives.
17. Assist and guide intellectual property experts.
18. Ensure projects are kept on schedule and work to mitigate issues as they arise
19. Lead and facilitate high-level software estimation to support business planning activities.
20. Train, Develop, Mentor Engineering Team through the use of a skills matrix and training plan.
Work Conditions or Specific constraints:
* International travels: ~2 trips/quarter on average; to Keene facility ~4 trips/month on average
* Mix of laboratory and office environment
Education Required:
Masters' degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
Experience Required:
* Minimum 15 years of experience in various R&D roles with a minimum of 10 years' experience developing software, including growth thru an organization as an engineering individual contributor. Exposure to marking and coding equipment is a plus.
* Minimum of 10 years working on new product development projects; must demonstrate experience in cross-functional collaboration with Marketing, Supply Chain, Quality, Technical Service, Finance, etc.
* Minimum of 5 years in the management of technical teams involved in new product development projects with a track record of delivering many successful products to your organization.
* Proven track record of managing technical teams to deliver products on time
Knowledge & Skills:
* Has good business understanding and knowledge of end-user environments and requirements.
* Capable of analyzing complex problems and synthesize results for executive audience.
* Superior verbal and written communication skills, including presentations and technical correspondence.
* Ability to establish cooperative working relationship with product marketing, design engineers, process engineering, technical support, customers and subcontractors.
* Familiar with complex cross-functional projects and matrix organizations.
* Advanced knowledge of C++11; functional decomposition, architectural viewpoints
* Advanced proficiency in the Agile methodology
* Advanced understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD).
* Experience with continuous integration using automated build systems.
* Experience with Object oriented design.
* Experience with Multi-threaded programming.

Markem-Imaje Watertown, MA, is an exciting expansion demonstrating our commitment to be the innovation leader in digital printing. This new, state-of-the-art, Global Design Center will be the hub for New Product Introduction of Laser- and DOD-based products. The office is situated close to Boston with easy access by car or public transportation.
