JOB SUMMARY:

With supervision, conducts basis research experiments to develop, implement and refine state-of-the-art assays. Perform routine research laboratory tasks including reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, record keeping and housekeeping.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The job accountabilities for this position involve research and development work. No clinical testing analysis, reagent preparation, data reduction, equipment maintenance or assay troubleshooting are to be done. In exceptional cases where the Research Associate is asked to assist the department with clinical duties, full training and competency documentation is required, and the individual must be under direct and constant CLS supervision as appropriate.

1. Routine Research Analysis
A. Performs simple testing experiments by established procedures
B. Prepares protocols, maintains research notebooks and other documentation
C. Organizes specimens and prepares them for testing
D. Prepares testing equipment and runs automated devices for R&D; experiments

2. Reagent Preparation for Research Use
A. Prepares simple, routine reagents or media using established formulas and stock solutions
B. Carries out parallel testing, recovery studies, or clinical correlation on new or prepared materials
C. Pools and aliquots specimens for use as controls

3. Data Reduction
A. Performs calculations or prepares graphs or other test reports for review by the appropriate staff member
B. Transfers raw data from analysis instrument to computer
C. Generates printouts

4. Research Equipment Maintenance & Calibration
A. Performs routine equipment maintenance calibration and troubleshooting according to procedure
B. Documents instrument checks, problems and solutions and notifies the appropriate staff member in the case of instrument failure

5. Quality Assurance
A. Assesses research test performance based on given criteria and notifies the supervisor in the case of out of range controls
B. Maintains control of research experiments through preparation and use of appropriate controls
C. Logs or charts specimen data
D. Helps prepare controls for experiments

6. Troubleshooting and Development
A. Reviews procedural execution for possible root cause
B. Carries out simple troubleshooting procedures
C. Performs R&D; problem solving experiments, as instructed

7. Inventory
A. Notifies supervisor when supplies run low
B. Unpacks, logs and stores supplies upon arrival
C. Labels chemicals, media, etc. with date of receipt and initials

8. Clerical Duties in Research Area
A. Monitoring instrument data
B. Maintains records of reagent preparation and testing
C. Tallies workload data
D. Collates, files and binds documents
E. Answers the phone and takes messages

9. Safety and Housekeeping
A. Uses protective clothing and equipment as appropriate
B. Is responsible for becoming familiar with and following laboratory safety procedures
C. Reports all incidents
D. Helps keep the lab area neat and clean
E. Assists with safety

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
BS/BA in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field required.

Work Experience:
1-3 years laboratory research experience required.

Special Requirements:
1. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers, including word processing, and spreadsheets. Experience with relevant scientific computing applications preferred.
2. Proven ability to accomplish technical tasks both independently and as a member of a research team.
