Job Description:
The newly developed DataSET team is responsible for gathering, enhancing and transforming customer data into business growth. We not only support businesses within Dow Jones, but help set the tone and standards of data by design. Our team is dynamic in supporting each other as well as other data scientists, data analysts, and data-hungry stakeholders across the organization.
The Data Analyst is an integral member of the Dow Jones Data Science and Engineering team. The role will support the data science, engineering and transformation strategy, which in turn supports the larger strategic goals at Dow Jones. This role would mainly support the Consumer side of the business, which includes WSJ, Barrons, MarketWatch and more; but may also include exposure to other areas of the business, such as advertising and the professional information business.
Based upon this, there are three key areas of focus for the role:
* Leverage the data and insight generated by the companys products to drive revenue and identify product opportunities;
* Execute the companys best practice and strategy for data; and
* Support the companys use of state-of-the art technology end-to-end; from data pipelines, to analysis, algorithms and visualization.
The data analyst should first and foremost understand what drives the company, which factors influence the companys strategy and how the available data within the company can contribute to the success of its strategy.
Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
* Oversee customer-facing report deliveries, both existing and ad hoc requests.
* Interpret trends from the data and work closely with stakeholders to enable them to understand the dynamics behind the data.
* Proposing future actions based on the insights learnt.
* Assist our data engineering team in conjunction with our data science & analytics team to help classify our data architecture for use with various reporting tools.
* Work with Data Engineering team to help optimize the data collection process.
* Oversee daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly dashboards and build new dashboards using Adobe, Tableau, GA360 or other approved data visualization tool leveraging our own data lakes.
* Collaborate with business stakeholders and understand the business problem they are trying to address.
* Leverage the companys immense data stores to provide actionable insight for key product and business decisions.
* Apply your expertise in quantitative analysis, data exploration, and the presentation of data to see beyond the numbers and understand how our users interact with our products.
* Facilitate delivery of various projects through all stages of production cycle. This includes working with Software Engineers, Operations, Data Collection, and Product Management to deliver timely and quality data.
* Help drive data instrumentation across the companys core business units. Manage development of data resources, gather requirements, organize sources and support product launches.
* Build custom solutions to meet market & internal needs for audience measurement reporting. This includes developing solutions, testing, and integrating into core production process.
* Work across functional teams to identify and resolve data issues. Apply critical thinking to quickly resolve issues.
* Be stewards of our data governance and data privacy requirements; erring on validation with key stakeholders first to ensure accuracy of data is provided, reduce misinterpretation of data, and prevent misuse or dissemination of sensitive data.
* Document and make transparent to stakeholders the methodology and requirements of projects delivered.
Preferred Tools/Skills:
* Bachelors degree in a quantitative subject (Statistics, Engineering, Economics, etc.)
* Experience in data analysis and problem solving with large amounts of diverse data.
* Ability to think creatively to solve complex problems.
* Ability to autonomously manage simultaneous projects in a fast paced business environment.
* Ability to work independently and collaborate across multiple teams.
* Knowledge of relational databases and methods for efficient data retrieval.
* Basic fluency in SQL or knowledge of relational databases and methods for efficiently retrieving data. Candidates with hands-on coding experience a plus.
* Strong Microsoft Excel skills are required.
* Experience with web analytics tools expected (particularly Adobe Analytics and BigQuery is a plus.)
* Must have strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate the results of analyses in a clear and effective manner.
* Demonstrate interest in core business problems and challenges unique to the journalism and media industry.
* Demonstrate curiosity to dive into available data and enjoy searching for patterns that could indicate new insights.
Knowledge/Experience: Ideally have worked as an Analyst within a media, marketing or data organization that handles membership and advertising models.
