Cornings Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of Position:

Firing technician within the CET Erwin Firing group with a primary focus on Firing Center kilns. This technician will be responsible for daily shift coverage of kiln operations, routine preventive maintenance as well as assisting firing process & equipment engineers in support of manufacturing improvement initiatives, including variability reduction, defect reduction, process control improvement, and 6-Sigma.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

* Load/unload of kilns
* Startup/monitoring of kilns
* 1st level troubleshooting of equipment/process issues
* Conducts routine preventive maintenance activities
* Assists and directs trades/contractors during shutdown maintenance activities
* Provides backup support to lead technician with regards to scheduling, recipe reviews and coordination of experiments, with experimenters
* Replacing thermocouples on all kilns
* Maintain, adhere, and train to documentation
* Maintain emphasis on housekeeping and safe work practices in kiln area

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Generally, 40-45 hours per week, but must be flexible. Second or third shift assignment is likely.

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

Associates Degree in a Technical Field with two years minimum experience, or five plus years of experience in related field

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

* Knowledge of gas and electric kilns, combustion technology
* Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
* Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
* Familiarity with Pi and Maximo
* Ability to handle multiple tasks
* Ability to monitor experiments
* Ability to work with data and communicate results from data
* Strong organizational skills, rigorous attention to detail and ability to deal with complexity
* Self-motivated with ability to function independently with minimal supervision
* Strong work ethic and desire to exceed expectations
* Understands problem solving tools (KT) and where to use them

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

* Experience with DMAIC, 6 sigma, and Process Control Process Discipline
* Technically curious and strong mechanical aptitude
* Knowledge and experience in ceramic thermal processing at a development, engineering, and/or production level
* Knowledge/experience in ceramic substrate/filter manufacturing (specifically firing)
* Experience working in a production environment

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

* Good communication and organizational skills
* Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and experience: operators, process engineers, project managers, technicians, R&D scientists, etc.
* Strong technical curiosity and drive
* Ability to work in a team-based environment
