Assistant General Counsel Reinsurance Disputes

We are seeking a litigation attorney to join the Reinsurance Legal Team within General Insurance (GI) at AIG. The Reinsurance Legal Team is comprised of attorneys and other professionals providing high quality advice and support across GI on ceded and assumed reinsurance-related matters globally. This position provides specialized legal services with respect to reinsurance disputes and reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Reinsurance Legal.
Essential duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited:
* Conducting legal research and analysis of facts and information to provide counsel and guidance to the relevant business functions and management on legal questions or issues.
* Collaboratively working with claim professionals, underwriting, risk control and other business functions while resolving legal issues.
* Handling your own docket of reinsurance disputes from initial advice through hearing or trial, and working as part of a team on significant or complex disputes.
* Supervising outside counsel engaged to represent the Company in reinsurance disputes. In conjunction with outside counsel, advising whether a case should be tried or settled and actively driving case to resolution with an appropriate sense of urgency and commitment to minimizing legal spend.
* Communicating regularly and concisely with business units, senior management, and others to ensure appropriate level of understanding and documentation exists for effective case management.
What we are looking for
* Juris Doctor required, and admission to the bar of New York.
* Minimum of 4 years of legal experience with a law firm and/or as in-house litigation counsel
* Experience in the insurance industry and with reinsurance disputes.
* Knowledge of reinsurance law and custom and practice.
* Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve desired results.
* Excellent verbal and written communication and analytical and problem solving skills, and the ability to think creatively to solve problems.
* Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments in a fast paced environment.
* Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic business results.
