Caterpillar is partnering with the Work-Based Learning programs in the State of Georgia to offer local students an opportunity to start building a welding manufacturing career. While working at Caterpillar Inc., you will work in an environment that supports excellence. Apprentice welders will work in welding functional areas to safely build excavators or small track-type tractors. This is an hourly position starting at $10.95/hr. Must be a Junior or Senior at a Georgia County high school and be at least 16 years of age to be considered.

Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Operates robotic and manual MIG weld machines.
* Must be able to inspect own work including quality checks utilizing weld and attribute gages and other measuring tools.
* Ability to perform in station repair on defective welds utilizing carbon air arc process, grinders, etc.
* Ability to clear common robotic welding system faults
* Mechanical job duties may include:
* Use of lifting devices to move heavy components of weights of more than 35 lbs to position heavy fabricated metal components in weld fixtures.
* General knowledge of manufacturing, methods, and processes
* Rotation to various positions within the Job Function area to perform related activities.
* Ability to perform routine maintenance (wire change, tip/nozzle change)
* Rotation to various positions within the Job Function area to perform related activities. Must be able to work in a highly structured environment, strictly adhering to provided standard work instructions
* Follows documented procedures standard work, routings, and blueprints to perform safe and defect free operations to create and machine components.
* Follows and utilizes CPS principles of 5S, Continuous Improvement Idea Reporting, Waste Elimination, and Standard Work.
* Keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition.
* Worker is responsible for process and final inspections
* Must be able to function as part of a team, willing to be multi-trained and maintain a safe, clean and orderly work area
* Must have effective communications skills

Basic Qualifications:

* T-fillet break test in the 2F (horizontal fillet) position
* Limited thickness groove test in the 1G (flat groove) position
* Must be a state of Georgia High School Junior or Senior
* Must earn a recommendation from the welding instructor
* Must have support of parent or legal guardian
* Must be eligible to work in the United States
* Must have reliable transportation to the Caterpillar Athens plant
* Apprentices must be able to work during school year either 6 am-10 am or 1 pm-5 pm to be considered.
* Must be 16 years of age or older by April 1, 2021

Physical Qualifications (with or without reasonable accommodation)

* Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods
* Ability to perform repetitive operations
* Ability to lift up to 35 lbs

Top candidates will also have:

* In good academic standing 2.5 or better GPA
* Experience with operating robotic welding systems
* Experience with blueprint reading
* Experience working in manufacturing or welding environment
* A good discipline record
* Intermediate proficiency in welding skills (i.e. MIG, TIG, etc.)
* Proficiency in reading AWS welding symbols

Additional Information: Resumes are highly encouraged for all applicants. This is an hourly welding apprenticeship position starting at $10.95/hour. Apprentices will work approximately 40 hours/week in the summer and 20 hours/week during the school year. Apprentices must be able to work during school year either 6 am-10 am or 1 pm-5 pm to be considered.
