The Associate Director, Communications and Public Affairs is a communications subject matter expert and is responsible for helping drive internal communication and engagement initiatives across the AbbVie US Patient Service organization. Reporting to the Director, Internal Communications, this high-profile role interacts regularly with multiple levels of the US Patient Services organization from leadership to cross-functional stakeholders to provide communications counsel and implement strategic project management and communications in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The Associate Director applies consistent use of internal communications and multi-channel communication strategies to deepen an internal understanding of a wide range of business strategies, capabilities, new initiatives, and performance metrics, while enhancing culture and engagement for field-based and home office employees. The role of the Associate Director is to help employees be informed, inspired, and empowered with relevant, accessible, and targeted messages and content.
This position supports the US Patient Services organization and primarily its Vice President and his senior staff when they communicate internally to broad audiences including US Patient Services teams and other AbbVie stakeholders. Internal communication accountabilities include developing, implementing and maintaining an internal communication strategy and tactical plan for US Patient Services. The tactical plan will involve building a rhythm to inform employees of ongoing successes, progress and relevant business updates. Key success factors include building effective partnerships with the Vice President, senior staff and across the business, superior verbal and written communications, leading via influence and being highly proactive to propose thoughtful initiatives and communications to support and drive the business priorities. This position will also support external engagements and social presence for the VP, Patient Services and will be responsible for building out and executing an external affairs engagement plan.
Key Responsibilities
* Work directly with the VP, US Patient Services to ensure clear direction and alignment to the Patient Services organization and key stakeholders.
* Design and execute a communications strategy that brings the US Patient Services narrative to life through compelling content, creative storytelling and engaging experiences including national meetings, town halls, interactive Q&As;, and rich written, digital, and video communications.
* Support external media/industry opportunities and social presence for VP, US Patient Services
* Assist Director, Internal Communications in the strategic planning and execution of broad US internal communication and content strategies, including US Commercial Priorities, crisis communications, Equity, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, HR Communications and enterprise philanthropic programs. Reinforces AbbVie enterprise and US Area communications and initiatives to US Patient Services.
* Partner and coordinates with a network of AbbVie internal communications leads and US Patient Services leaders when sharing, scheduling, and customizing AbbVie corporate and US Area content to US Patient Services teams.
* Assist in fostering an inclusive US Patient Services culture through meaningful collaboration and active participation. Internally and externally model our ways of working grounded in empathy, respect and trust.
* Manage scope, project plan, logistics and schedule of strategic and tactical initiatives.
* Develop and implement communications strategies and culture initiatives that support the US Patient Services, working closely with BHR, and other cross-functional stakeholders (i.e., Commercial Analytics & Operations, Legal, OEC, MABI, and Finance).
* Proactively plan and manage OEC, Legal and HR content reviews, and identify which audience segments need to receive a communication or tailored version of the communication (e.g. employees vs. contractors)
* Stay up to date on the changing digital landscape to ensure optimal strategy across existing channels, as well as recommending new platforms for consideration.
* Write communications, including speech writing and portal updates as needed.
* Leverage AbbVie tools, and proposes new methods, to measure the success of internal communications initiatives. Embraces a spirit of improving and evolving internal communications based on audience needs and engagement.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelors Degree required
* Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a corporate communications role (internal, executive, external, digital social media communications)
* Advanced knowledge of communication strategy and current trends in communication technology and multi-channel communication strategies
* Advanced written, oral, and digital communication skills and excellent organizational skills.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment handling multiple tasks that are time sensitive in high-pressure situations.
* Working knowledge of the market including trends and issues as they relate to AbbVie.
* Works well with cross-functional stakeholders and can own projects from idea phase to implementation, adapting and iterating as needed.
* Outcomes-focused with a high degree of attention to detail.
* Demonstrated relationship management, interpersonal skills, ability to motivate, lead, influence, and engage without direct authority.
* Able to see connections between seemingly disparate issues and distill complex content into clear, concise, and engaging communications.
* Possesses integrity, agility, accountability, and self-awareness.
Preferred
* Corporate communications in a large pharmaceutical company or other life sciences organization preferred.
* Proven experience in reflecting a senior leaders voice when crafting written messages and talking points.
* Proven experience in creating communications strategies and messages that embody, resonate, and align with a patient-centric, mission-driven organization.
* Proven experience in developing and publishing communications in a regulated environment including stakeholder reviews of content
