Make your career count! We are seeking a Regional Philanthropy Officer I, supporting the foundations revenue line, to serve our community and support our lifesaving services. In this role, you will identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward current and prospective foundation donors to grow financial support for the American Red Cross. You will be responsible for meeting an annual revenue target of approximately $300K by working with an assigned portfolio of institutional donors and prospects to advance the mission of the organization. This role requires good writing skills, time management, and ability to multitask. As required, you may serve as an operational resource to less experienced team members to ensure consistent and effective implementation of donor development plans.

Currently, this position will work remotely. We have a strong training plan in place to get you integrated into our team and region. Eventually, this position will work from the San Francisco (1663 Market Street) or Oakland (6230 Claremont Ave) offices and will travel throughout the region to meet with donors.

Responsibilities

Strategy: Develops and executes strategy for donors to ensure retention, growth of donor contributions, and recaptures. Works collaboratively with other departments and partners with development staff at the National Office to create customized solicitation strategies matching the priorities and objectives of the Red Cross and interests of the Foundation.

Fundraising Targets and Portfolio Management: Manages an assigned portfolio of donors and prospects with intent to form deep relationships. Responsible for a minimum annual fundraising goal tied to a Foundation portfolio. Develops donor management plans for the portfolio resulting in strategic, knowledgeable, and complex asks. Solicits assigned donors through grant applications, phone calls, face to face visits and the preparation of personalized materials. Revenue target may increase due to major domestic disasters.

Prospect Development: Conduct research on regional Foundations regularly to develop a strong donor pipeline. Keep informed of community priorities and philanthropic trends. Implement activities to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors at the $5,000 level or higher, maximizing revenue for the American Red Cross. Work with program staff, Board members and other leadership volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional donors.

Relationship Development: Develops ongoing relationships with Foundation representatives and Board members for the benefit of the American Red Cross. Assist organizations in achieving their goals by clearly articulating Red Cross programs, listening to needs, and aligning programs to their interests. Work with grantor staff to determine eligibility and viability, and program staff to determine the scope and deliverable of the project. Develops effective working relationships with government, non-profit representatives, and others in the community to nurture their connections to the organization.

Grant Writing and Administration: Writes and edits concise letters of intent, compelling proposals, gift acknowledgments, and stewardship reports promptly, with input from the program staff. Prepare budgets and monitor deliverables. Maintain a calendar of grant application deadlines and progress reports. Updates donor records in Salesforce following donor contacts, and maintain accurate records of grant submissions, contracts, awards, and rejections.

Other: Participates in disaster relief fundraising projects as necessary.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Advanced degree highly desirable.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of sales or fundraising experience required. Proven experience in developing strategies for donor retention, growth and, recapture, and proven success with complex requests and grant writing is preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop successful proposals and other materials. Ability to interpret and understand programmatic goals and translate to funders. Knowledge of office systems: MS-Office and Salesforce preferred. Ability to relate well and work effectively with multiple constituencies and audiences. A team player committed to developing and working within a collaborative environment and ensuring the highest customer service orientation. Knowledge of foundations in Northern California preferred.

Travel: Requires travel within the region. May include sitting for long periods, driving a vehicle, and working under challenging conditions. A current valid driver's license and a good driving record are required.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential. May include sitting for long periods, driving a vehicle, and working under challenging conditions.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout the country. Because the Red Cross is a disaster response organization, staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during a period of a major disaster.
