This individual will lead new capability exploration supporting Standard Commercial, in addition to Claims, Loss Control Services, Underwriting & Product, and Services. This includes supporting the definition of key business objectives, management of the innovation portfolio for each business unit, working to ensure awareness and limit redundancy, and support financial objectives and business unit priorities. In addition, along with supporting the intake of new product opportunities, this individual will ensure exploration remain aligned to the original business purpose defined by the business units.
Preferably, this individual will work out of Des Moines, though consideration may be given to other locations. Some travel is required, approximately 3-5 times per year.
Key Responsibilities:
* Partner with the Product Development Director and leverage existing competitive intelligence to solidify strategic opportunities
* Work with line of business leaders to identify possible product advancements and align product enhancement demand against strategic opportunity to define new product development roadmap

Core Duties and Responsibilities:
* Leads new business development and implementation projects. Provides leadership to all functional areas related to product design and management. Makes recommendations based on in-depth functional knowledge and opportunities for improvement.
* Develops, manages and implements strategic business rules that support business requirements. Reviews pricing, design features, and associated processes. Partners with underwriting to develop standards and guidelines.
* Develops and drives key initiatives related to growth and profitability. Manages strategies related to multiple product growth and profitability objectives. Coordinates product strategy with sales, agency management, field product and marketing.
* Develops and controls time lines, including regularly re-assessing risks, throughout project life. Revises project plans on an on-going basis to maintain alignment with other projects and/or business strategy.
* Leads the process of analyzing market information on competitors. Proactively identifies product opportunities.
* Leads the coordination, development and implementation of new product training.
* Responsible for internal and external resource management, budgeting and cost containment.
* Provides market analysis tools and global data to the regions. Completes a national product analysis regarding performance, financial results, profitability, business mix, and competition. Designs forecasting models and functions as a technical expert on product issues. Communicates financial objectives and results.
* Guides the exploration, sponsoring, and evaluation process of new product performance tools and technology enhancements. Accountable for the quality and effectiveness of rate change and system enhancement implementations. Coordinates process change improvements. May provide input to appropriate functional areas to develop business specifications.
* Leads the rate review, filing and communication process for new development initiatives across all functional areas. Coordinates product recommended implementations. Initiates action plans to improve and/or maintain product performance. Ensures underwriting guidelines align with rate plan changes and corporate strategy.
* Designs and implements state level product strategy and communication plans throughout the organization. Assures effective communication to appropriate product leaders and functional areas of the organization.
* Proactively seeks out opportunities to interact with other business partners while developing cross functional knowledge in claims, sales, marketing, pricing, operations, underwriting and finance. Acts as a mentor to business partners.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, product management, finance, business administration or related field. MBA preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Insurance licenses or designations such as CPCU, ACAS, ARM, FLMI, NASD, Project Management Certification preferred.
Experience: Six years experience in personal lines/commercial lines insurance, financial services, marketing, or communications including two years previous product management experience. Managerial experience, including: facilitation, negotiation, delegation, mentoring preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: In-depth knowledge of P&C product, analytical tools, telematics, core business functions, underwriting policies and best practices, performance measurement techniques, and systems required. Knowledge of related pricing, marketing, insurance models/contracts, and financial analysis necessary. Project management concepts and techniques; working knowledge of business terminology; business systems and data processing policies, practices and procedures. Knowledge of business-related systems concepts and requirements preferred. Excellent relationship building skills. Exceptional project management skills such as organization and planning, interaction, leadership and motivational techniques. Strong negotiation skills and data quality/integrity problem solving skills. Administrative ability to plan, coordinate and assess the work of others, and strong personnel management skills in order to train, develop and motivate staff. Decision making skills for problem identification and selection of alternatives. Oral and written communication skills at all levels for technical personnel and customer contact.
