Chief Architect, RAN Intelligence

The Communications Service Provider landscape is getting transformed in a revolutionary way coincident with the upgrade of mobility infrastructure to 5G. The disaggregation and move to software of core, edge, and RAN network functions within telecommunications carriers is leading to a highly virtualized and programmable infrastructure platform. In addition to leveraging cloud architectures as well as rapid application development platforms, technologies like AI are becoming critical in tuning carrier networks, both fixed and mobile, for better performance.

The Telco and Edge Cloud (TEC) BU in VMware is focused on building a multi-billion $ business by becoming the trusted software platform provider to CSPs globally, for supporting their virtual network functions (VNFs) and containerized network functions (CNFs) for Core, Edge, RAN and Private 5G use cases. We have established a world class Advanced Technologies team for discovery, creation and verification of non-traditional architecture approaches that will guide future evolution of our TECBU products and platforms. We are seeking a Chief Architect, RAN Intelligence to join this team. The successful candidate will have significant experience in system architecture, design and development of open systems that sit at the cross section of 5G, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Distributed Cloud and Machine Intelligence, with a specialized focus on Open RAN Intelligence technology and ecosystem development. This candidate must have strong credentials for creating intellectual property through research results, patents, systems design and prototyping. They will have worked with industry standards and open-source communities to identify and solve problems and they will have been successful in creating techniques, tools and platforms that have become best-practice or been adopted as industry de facto and/or open reference design.

This role will be responsible for the following:

* Chief RAN Intelligence Architect: Function as chief RAN Intelligence architect for TEC BU, partnering closely with other leaders on the TEC BU Advanced Technologies and RAN Intelligence Engineering teams to drive product architecture evolution. Partner with the RAN Intelligence Engineering team to create commercial-grade products targeted at Communications Service providers (CSPs) and Real-Time Enterprise. Be an evangelist and a driving force for use of open RAN architecture to create compelling alternatives to closed solutions.
* Industry Leadership: Represent VMware by taking leadership positions to drive technology development and specifications through relevant industry forums such as O-RAN Alliance and Telecom Infra Project (TIP). Work closely with product management and engineering teams to ensure VMware TEC BU RAN Intelligence products/solutions are aligned with industry standards and architectural principles.
* Customer Co-creation: Engage with key customers for co-creation of differentiated Open RAN Intelligence solutions for VMware Telco Cloud products and platforms. Drive co-development activities in customer labs, and multi-lateral incubation prototypes with broader ecosystem partners.
* Strategic Partner Ecosystems: Engage with strategic partners for co-creation of differentiated Open RAN Intelligence architectures leading to joint go to market opportunities. Create and test prototype solutions.
* Customer Evangelism: Become a trusted advisor to customers senior architects, engineers and scientists in their journey to transform their infrastructure and applications using VMware Telco Cloud platforms.
* Industry Incubation Ecosystems: Drive incubation efforts with international innovation ecosystems to Identify, Qualify, Define, and Drive new technologies and systems that will enable VMware success in the future marketplace being shaped by fusion of 5G, Cloud and AI.

Requirements

Ph-d in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, with 15+ years of demonstrated success in architecture and design of full-stack wireless systems, with an in-depth expertise in Open RAN, 5G and Machine Learning.

* Demonstrable success in advancing Open RAN architectures and technologies
* Extensive expertise in communications networking technologies, 3GPP, and non-3GPP wireless systems
* Extensive expertise in driving disruptive approaches for orchestration, management and automation of telco edge systems
* Demonstrable success in driving Open RAN industry alliances and open-source communities, e.g. O-RAN Alliance and TIP Open RAN
* Working knowledge of deep learning, artificial neural networks, game theory; and applicability to industrial problems
* Proven track record of inventing disruptive technologies for successful industry outcomes
* Proven track record of driving multi-lateral research ecosystems bridging industry and academia
* Demonstrable success driving joint research collaborations with customers and industry partners
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to speak effectively to executive level as well as with various technical and business management levels.
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrated ability to create intellectual property through Patents
* Software programming skills: Java, Python, Go, Scripting
* Experience in Machine Learning tools, e.g., TensorFlow, Scikit Learn, Keras.io
* Experience with Git or similar and embedded SW Development environments
