About the role

The Senior Wildfire Mitigation Specialist (SWMS) reports directly to the AVP/Western Zone Director of Loss Prevention Services (Wildfire Protection Unit (WPU) Director).

Job responsibilities include:

Consultations

Assist assigned partner with entire consultation process by:

* Performing detailed, high quality and effective brush consultations and pre-treatments to ensure that AIG clients are properly protected, and our premium rate is properly reflected in our UW process. This includes proper documentation and taking photographs of all structures on the property.
* Identify wildfire hazards to all structures and provide feasible mitigation solutions to clients to help increase the chances of the risk surviving a wildfire on its own.
* As needed, safely and effectively apply Phos-Chek fire retardant on non-irrigated native fuel owned by insured.
* Maintain consistency with Risk Management Services (RMS) by validating prior RMS wildfire requirements and documenting whether outstanding requirements have been met or are still outstanding. If the prior RMS requirement is valid and still outstanding, make duplicate requirement.
* Use online maps to document approximate distances to brush from clients home. The direction, fuel type, terrain and distance will be listed in the risk evaluation in every report.
* Force referring any seen risks that present an extreme wildfire hazard via Radius to WPU Director for review.
* If you come into contact with an Unacceptable cannot be engineered property, document the WHY in your risk evaluation and contact the Underwriter (UW) or Regional Underwriting Manager (RUM) to discuss your findings.
* If assigned, check Radius Reviewer Dashboard daily and review and provide feedback to submitter with 48 hours of receipt.
* Educate clients on importance of prevention and mitigation, referring them to commonly used Firewise principles and landscaping tip sheet.
* Influence and motivate clients during the consultation process to take action on identified mitigation. Provide suggestions and requirements when applicable.
* Promote Wildfire Protection Unit program by performing all duties in a professional and subject matter expert manner.
* Communicate clearly and professionally to clients, brokers and all stakeholders.
* Conduct a pre-determined number of consultations per month based on individual performance goals.
* You are mutually responsible for achieving the required number of consultations. Effectively work with scheduler to ensure that open dialogue is occurring, and maximum productivity is achieved.
* Arrive to appointments at scheduled time or contact client if running late.
* Submit supplements within a 4-day turnaround or less.
* Submit high quality, professional reports, free of grammatical and spelling errors that contain photographs.
* Provide expert knowledge on brush/wildfire matters to underwriters, RUMS, management, clients, brokers, sales and marketing.
* Constant studying of code requirements, fire guidelines and territory knowledge.

Identify geographic areas of concern, where business shouldnt be written due to exposure.

* Work with external experts to understand all aspects of fire prevention and mitigation.
* Appropriately identify and refer any insureds to our preferred vendors.
* Educate the client on ember resistant venting.

Fire Deployment

* In a safe manner, effectively and immediately respond to assigned wildfires to ensure that AIG WPU has an opportunity to protect clients homes. This might require overnight trips or travel to other states for an extended period of time.
* Submit forms in a timely manner. All fields will be filled in with a descriptive summary.

Other Duties

* Required to make HPU callouts during a hurricane event.
* Answer WPU hotline calls as needed when not deployed on a fire.
* Knowledge and compliance with all company policies.
* Timely and proper submittal of expense reports.
* Compliance with expense report policy and corporate credit card policy.
* Timely truck maintenance.
* Ensure that with proper pre-planning, costs are taken into consideration (travel, etc).
* Understand WPU costs and how it impacts the WPU budget.
* Perform outreach to fire departments as needed to build relationships, trust and to educate them on WPU program and how it relates to our mutual clients. Outreach may be conducted independently with your assigned partner or jointly with RZ Liaison and/or WPU Director.
* Develop and validate a territory specific list of qualified fuel mitigation contractors for your battalion.
* Maintain Red Card certification by successfully completing any required training.
* Broker visits/presentations.
* Joint travel with Business Development Manager.
* Joint travel with Underwriter.
* Joint travel with Risk Management Specialist.
* Onboard new employees.
* Radius report reviewer for multiple WMS
* Perform HPU callouts

What were looking for:

The Senior Wildfire Mitigation Specialist must meet established minimum requirements:

* Have four (4) years firefighting experience with a municipal, county or federal fire agency
* Prior successful completion of NWCG annual fire safety training with physical fitness Pack Test
* Possession of state and federal certification:
* ICS 100 (Introduction to Incident Command System)
* ICS 200 (Basic Incident Command System)
* S-110 (Basic Wildland Fire Suppression Orientation)
* S-130 (Firefighter Training)
* S-190 (Wildland Fire Behavior)
* S-212 (Wildland Fire Chainsaws)
* S-215 (Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface)
* Possess a valid Driver's License applicable to apparatus
* Working knowledge of:
* Driver safety
* Up to date prevention and mitigation tactics and strategies
* Radius report writing

Must have ability to:

* Safely and effectively perform all functions of prevention, mitigation, fire response, customer service, outreach and report writing.
* Follow directives of WPU Director or Field Supervisor.
* Perform assigned duties in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
* Provide continuous training to Wildfire Mitigation Specialist on assigned apparatus.
* Work extended hours on initial attack response; maintain flexibility on multi-day incidents to meet operational needs.
* Respond to emergency incidents out of state as needed.
* Perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency response activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of intense heat, cold or smoke.
* Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
* Operate personal computer, radio, Garmin and other communication equipment.
* Fill ATF in Fulcrum, providing a detailed report for each property.
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
* Follow verbal and written instructions.
* Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
* Prepare clear, concise and complete oral and written reports.
* Exercise proper judgment in the performance of assigned duties.

Department of Transportation / IRP / OSHA / HASP

* Pass all vehicle inspections for DOT, OSHA and IRP.
* All trucks are to pass inspections 100%. In addition to formal inspections, perform quarterly self-reviews with check list with partner and update and correct as needed.
* Maintain accurate DOT and/or IRP paperwork.
* Ensure all roadside inspections by CHP are passed and correct any items that are not in compliance.
* Each morning perform pre-trip inspection (Autosist):

Prepare an electronic Department of Transportation report in Teletrac app. Each employee is required to login and out each day.
