We have an immediate opening for a Machinist II to support R&D. The machinists goal is to manually operate CNC and manual machines and produce complex production and prototype parts to high-tolerance design specifications in an accurate and timely manner. In this role, you will be producing prototype parts from basic designs to complex assemblies with production runs. You will join an interdisciplinary and collaborative Engineering team. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. This position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Essential Functions:

* Machine high quality, precision parts and tooling

* Handle material from rough stock to finished parts

* Understanding how to select and prepare appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used for machining work in both soft materials (e.g., plastic, aluminum, etc.) as well as superalloy/refractory materials (e.g., Titanium, Inconel, etc.)

* Read and understand technical drawings; follow written and verbal instructions to perform technical work and operate conventional, special purpose and CNC milling centers

* Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements

* Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes and equipment; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; monitoring coolant; adjusting feeds and speeds

* Perform hand work: deburring using deburring tools, drilling and tapping holes and assembly

* Design and fabricate custom tools and fixtures including designing alignment and holding fixtures, 3 and 4-jaw chucks, attachments, and materials onto machines

* Use a variety of precision inspection instruments to verify machined components meet engineering drawing geometric tolerances proficiently including: digital/dial calipers and micrometers

* Measure, examine, and tests completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications

* Program, set up, and operate a 3-axis CNC mill and operate a manual mill and lathe

* Assist engineers and designers with design activities and make suggestions relating to the machining and fabrication of parts and assemblies

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

* Minimum 5 years experience in set-up and programming of 3-axis CNC vertical milling machines and turning machines.

* Experience in manual machining including millers, lathes, surface grinder and saws.

* High school diploma or equivalent

* Two-year machinist vocational program with 3-5 years of experience preferred

* Broad knowledge of vital instruments and tools

* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little supervision

* Excellent attention to detail, and ability to perform precise procedures consistently

A note about the physical demands and work environment:

* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is constantly required to, stand, squat, turn/twist, use hands to: handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit, hear, walk, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk, and smell. Good eye hand coordination is required.

* While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures and work space restrictions.

* The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

* Employees will be required to wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include: eye, hearing and respiratory protection, protective smock, steel toe shoes, gloves, hard hats, or face shields. Contact lenses may not be allowed in some areas.
