Specific Job Description

Candidate will be expected to provide direct engineering and oversight to new, complicated, and highly developmental systems. Provide support to these complicated systems, foster a culture, oversight, development, and training for newer less experienced engineers. Candidate requires a broad range of technical skills; mechanical, fluids, electrical, controls, software development, modeling/simulation, machine design, vibration, fatigue, shock, fracture mechanics, etc. Position will place specific emphasis on Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment, Advanced Weapons Elevators and Electric Aircraft Elevators electromechanical systems. In addition to the role requires extensive project management and systems engineering to ensure requirement traceability.

Role will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Technical ownership of system components (machinery, electrical, piping, HVAC, controls, software, etc.) at a detailed working level to include performing detailed calculations/analysis, drawing/diagram technical review, product model review, vendor issue resolution, change order scoping, trade studies, etc.
Perform complicated analysis using both classical and computer based modeling for machine design, vibration, fatigue, shock, fracture mechanics, etc.
Perform software development and validation oversight
Perform modeling and simulation both using software and software/hardware
Develop test plans/oversight or both upfront design and resolution of issues
Ability to systematically develop trouble shooting/resolution approach to problems identified during construction. This would include both performing the trouble shooting and assembling/leading a team to reach resolution
Develop of plan/process to integrate new complicated, and highly developmental systems into ship design, develop of installation procedures/process, custom fixtures, custom software, oversight of the deckplate to support installation, etc.
Review and manage system requirements invoked via ship specifications, government furnished information (GFI), change orders, etc. and coordinate between engineering and design personnel across multiple departments to ensure requirements are understood and overall system objectives are met
Perform and coordinate technical consultation services for the government regarding emergent issues with existing equipment and requirements as well as potential future system enhancements
Act as the company lead for all planned and unplanned deck plate work; waterfront issues, grooming, test support, alignment, etc.
Coordinate with program office, contracts, scoping/pricing, sourcing, planning, and other NNS personnel to ensure company objectives are met
Prepare and deliver presentations to government, NNS, and vendors, from the working level up to higher management levels

Basic Qualifications

9 Years with Bachelors in Science; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
