Job Description

Working under the day to day supervision of the pharmacists and the Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications. This includes but is not limited to: receiving, distribution, management of expiration dates, management of inventory in Pyxis, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The job requires excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Ordering/ Receiving
Assists with receiving order from wholesaler
Scans in delivery, including adding barcodes to EHR and ADM’s.
Properly inventories/stickers delivery to ensure all items are received
Confirms that each med is “scannable”. Involves pharmacist when appropriate
Helps to maintain proper stock levels of drugs, supplies and solutions by Informing in writing, the need for an item when it is getting low
Repackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when necessary
Maintains list of drugs affected by manufacturer’s shortages
Obtain all medications and supplies necessary to provide patient care (wholesaler, Material
Management, direct vendors, repackagers, drop ship items, courier items, etc.)
Reach out to manufacturers as necessary for supply chain issues
Facilitate the remedy for incorrect, short, or damaged products delivered from the vendors
Account for invoices from all vendors and process with A/P for payment
Manage transfers between facilities (internal billing, obtain currier, etc.)
Transfer meds to and from the LUM
Order minor equipment via PO process with Central Supply
Replace specialty items when they expire using vendor specific processes (TNKASE, Alteplase, etc.)
Maintain records for all recalls. Manage the removal of recalled products and the disposition according to the recall instructions.
Establish and manage appropriate PAR levels on all products to drive inventory turns
Establish and maintain relationships with all vendors
Oversee the removal of expired products with the reverse distributor, processing returns in a timely fashion to maximize potential credit
Maximize contract compliance with purchases
Communicate shortages within the department and participate in the process of obtaining alternative products when appropriate. Follow processes for obtaining allocated products and coordinating with other purchasers to move product where it is most needed.
Attend system buyer meetings (weekly conf calls and in person meetings as convened)
Provide data for reporting to P&T.
Maintain records for DCSA (pedigree) – able to retrieve when needed
Oversee the retention and storage of purchasing records
Facilitate all aspects of the physical inventory process
Participate in the adherence to expense budget and explaining variances to finance via reports · Coordinate State supplied vaccines – reordering, producing temp records, renewing program annually
Fills floor stock requests
Bills ambulance providers and miscellaneous areas as required.
Reviews and handles batch rejections and interface errors
Performs duties of a Pharmacy Technician I, II or III as required by a staffing model.
Performs administrative assistant tasks as assigned

Maintains Logs
Responsible for the daily accurate documentation of logs including but not limited to refrigerators, hood cleaning, eye wash
Reports any omissions or errors Handle Controlled Substances
Understands the importance of excellent record keeping, accuracy and handoffs when dealing with Controlled Substances.
Immediately reports any concerns/discrepancies to pharmacist or supervisor Knowledge and Skills
Written and oral communication skills
Ability to work in a team environment

Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, and staff
Ability to work with excel spreadsheets.
Performs other duties as assigned

Ability to triage phone calls for pharmacists; Distinguishing which requests require a pharmacist’s intervention and which can be handled by a tech

Maintains a high degree of professionalism in manner and attitude within the department and outside the department
Maintains excellent working relationships with others

Supports the training of new staff
Manages time effectively and prioritizes accordingly
Develops and maintains technician schedule
In the case of technician emergency will cover the technician shift or find coverage including weekends, holidays, and evenings
Maintains all technician compliance records
Develops and trains new and existing technicians
Prepares technician payroll

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

I. Education: High School diploma required, Associates or Bachelors degree preferred.

II. Experience: 2 years Pharmacy technician experience as a tech II/lead preferred, pharmacy buyer

experience preferred

Certification/Licensure: Licensure and Competencies

Is responsible for maintaining licensure CPhT and State registration as required
Is responsible for completing all educational modules including but not limited to: Steward University

III. Management: Experience is scheduling and staff management

IV. Software/Hardware: Meditech/Pyxis experience preferred, proficient in Word and Excel
