Fidelity Labs is looking for a Principal level engineer to help build out our API Platform. This project is still in early stages and has room for exciting greenfield development!
The Value You Deliver
Attention to detail: An eye for detailed code review, writing clean code, and thoroughly reading documentation.
Leadership: A track record of mentoring junior engineers and explaining to them not only what standard methodologies are, but why they exist. As a startup, we can't anticipate everything that needs to happen every sprint, and we're looking for developers who can see gaps and move to fill them, while still collaborating with the rest of the team. We also work with a lot of other teams within Fidelity, so we also need people with experience with cross-team collaboration.
Shipping features and debugging production incidents in event-driven distributed systems.
Excellent technical interpersonal skills and a desire to make existing documentation better both for fellow developers and external customers. We're interested in people who can take dry, abstract concepts and refine them into something even a non-technical audience can understand.
Curiosity: Interest in the tools and abstractions used and how they work. Looking for someone who loves to have a detailed understanding of the technology they depend on and are interested in continually improving processes, whether that be questioning whether the default index type on the relational database should be a B-tree or sharing a useful new keyboard shortcut in the team's text editor.
TypeScript expertise: A strong instinct for writing accurate and specific type annotations, and knowledge of features such as the distinction between classes, types, and interfaces. Candidates with experience in other languages such as Go, Java, Ruby, and Python are also welcome to apply, as long as there is a proven track record to learn new languages.
Experience and Skills You Bring
Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in software architecture, cloud services, microservices, and event-driven paradigms.
Production Expertise: Significant experience shipping features, debugging production incidents, and optimizing performance in event-driven distributed systems.
Experience with using logging and observability platforms like Datadog and Amazon Cloudwatch.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years in software development, with a focus on platform engineering or API development. Experience with AWS cloud services such as ALB, Aurora, and S3, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL desired. Experience with identity management platforms like Auth0 is a bonus

Fidelity’s hybrid working model blends the best of both onsite and offsite work experiences. Working onsite is important for our business strategy and our culture. We also value the benefits that working offsite offers associates. Most hybrid roles require associates to work onsite every other week (all business days, M-F) in a Fidelity office.
Please be advised that Fidelity’s business is governed by the provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, the Investment Company Act of 1940, ERISA, numerous state laws governing securities, investment and retirement-related financial activities and the rules and regulations of numerous self-regulatory organizations, including FINRA, among others. Those laws and regulations may restrict Fidelity from hiring and/or associating with individuals with certain Criminal Histories.

Fidelity Investments is a privately-owned investment management company that was established in 1946 as a mutual fund company. Fidelity now offers a range of services including fund distribution and investment advice, wealth management, life insurance, retirement services, and securities execution and clearance. It manages equity, fixed income, and balanced mutual funds for individual investors, businesses, financial advisors, and institutional investors.
Based in Boston, Massachusetts, it is one of the largest investment management firms in the United States, with over 26 million customers, $6.5 trillion in total customer assets, and more than $2.4 trillion in global assets under management
History of Fidelity Investments
The Fidelity Fund was established in 1930, a year after the stock market crash of 1929 and before the Great Depression of 1933. The fund continued to operate until 1943 when it was acquired by Boston-based lawyer Edward C. Johnson II. At the time, the fund reported assets under management valued at $3 million. In 1946, Johnson II founded the Fidelity Management and Research Company, now Fidelity Investments, to serve as an investment advisor to the Fidelity Fund. When running the fund, Johnson’s objective was to buy stocks with a potential for growth, and not necessarily blue-chip stocks.
Fidelity Investments Operations
Fidelity Investments operates several businesses, with the main ones being mutual funds and brokerage services. The mutual fund division comprises three divisions – equity, high-income, and fixed income divisions. The company operates Fidelity Contrafund, the largest non-indexed mutual fund in the United States, with over $107.4 billion in assets. Fidelity Investments also owns Fidelity Magellan, which was at one time managed by former CEO and President Ned Johnson. Fidelity Magellan manages assets totaling $15.5 billion.
