Summary:
Assisting with the selection of birds at approximately six weeks of age based on conformation, physical attributes, and family data; assisting with movement of birds within the complex. Other duties may be assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assisting with the selection of up to 2500 pedigree birds daily by identifying gender, catching, scanning wing band number, and auditing market birds for wing bands. Monitoring ventilation and light. (35%)
Assisting with properly identifying the coop birds are assigned to (30%)
Maintaining clean foot pans in assigned boot room, sanitizing selection breakroom and all equipment used during selection process. Observing condition of farm structures and equipment and recommend needed maintenance and repairs. (15%)
Assisting with setting up for selection by loading empty coops into house, placing catch frames in pens for easier bird access, hanging lights for better visual, setting up scales and scanner, making coop labels, placing coops in pens and running needed cords. Ensuring dead birds are disposed of properly each day at the end of selection (10%)
Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice, such as: assisting with moving birds from brood house to feed conversion or dissection and washing/disinfecting vehicles; properly euthanizing weak/ill birds in accordance with company policy (10%)
Biosecurity/Animal Welfare Requirements:
The jobsite is a biosecure environment which requires showering, changing clothing and footwear before entering the facility. Appropriate clothing and footwear are provided by the Company. No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry and body piercings covered by appropriate clothing. Must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds, etc.). Must be willing to sign and abide by the Company Biosecurity and Company Animal Welfare Guidelines.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical: Must use safe lifting techniques. Must regularly lift and/or move, with assistance, up to 50 pounds (items such as bird coops, tables and tools). May be required to occasionally move up to 300 pounds such as stacks of bird coops. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand majority of shift on multiple floor surfaces (i.e. concrete floor, shavings); walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects and controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; climb/ladder usage; stoop/bend up to 1000 times per day; talk or hear; drive a vehicle within the farm complex. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Environment: Required to work on wet, slippery surfaces and in hot, dry, extreme dusty, wet and cold environments.
Personal Protective Equipment Required: Safety goggles, safety glasses, face shield, chemical gloves, waterproof apron, and company issued footwear are required. Ear plugs will be used as needed. NIOSH approved N95 particulate respirators will be worn as needed.
Chemicals Commonly Used: Disinfectants such as Synergize, Virocid, Lysol, Bleach, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, etc.
