The Role

Reporting to the Manager Research Team Leader, this position will support the coverage of Fidelity-managed funds used in the investment solutions delivered by FAMS investment teams as well as prospective funds that could be used in the future. This position will also liaise with our manager research counterparts in Strategic Advisers, Inc. (SAI) and Fidelity Institutional Wealth Adviser (FIWA) who partner with FAMS to cover open-architecture funds.  Critical to success in this role will be the ability to 1) confidently engage with fund managers on various facets of their investment process (e.g., financial markets, philosophy, portfolio construction, risk management, performance), 2) effectively develop research conviction and communicate portfolio updates to FAMS portfolio managers and 3) actively participate in asset class and portfolio strategy discussions in various investment forums. This position will be located at the company’s headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Value You Deliver

Responsible for manager due diligence across specified asset classes for existing and prospective funds used in various FAMS investment solutions:

Organize, prepare for and lead meetings with underlying portfolio managers to discuss investment philosophy & process, strategy objectives, portfolio construction, and performance.
Support the monitoring and analysis of fund performance, attribution, risk and holdings using analytical tools including Bloomberg, FactSet, Stylus, Morningstar, Style Analytics, eVestment Alliance, Barra and other quantitative tools.
Provide investment recommendations to FAMS portfolio managers through published research reports, group presentations, and 1:1 meetings.
Present monthly and quarterly reviews of fund performance and positioning to FAMS investment teams.
Meet with clients and consultants to showcase the team’s research capabilities and provide updates on underlying fund positioning and performance.
Monitor the investment universe to identify potential new investment opportunities that will directly impact portfolio recommendations and client investment returns.

Contribute to team discussions and asset class initiatives.
Fulfill ad hoc research requests from FAMS investment teams.

The Expertise and Skills You Bring

Required 5+ years of relevant manager research experience. Desired experience in liquid and illiquid alternative strategies in addition to domestic and international equity funds. 
Undergraduate degree with progress towards or completion of CFA and/or CAIA program, and/or a Master’s degree is preferred
Ability to comfortably engage in in-depth conversations with portfolio managers, clients, and consultants
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to analyze and derive insights from large sets of data
Capability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously with superior organizational skills

Most associates within FAMS will have a hybrid schedule with a requirement to work onsite in Boston at least 50% of the time. These requirements are subject to change.

History of Fidelity Investments

The Fidelity Fund was established in 1930, a year after the stock market crash of 1929 and before the Great Depression of 1933. The fund continued to operate until 1943 when it was acquired by Boston-based lawyer Edward C. Johnson II. At the time, the fund reported assets under management valued at $3 million. In 1946, Johnson II founded the Fidelity Management and Research Company, now Fidelity Investments, to serve as an investment advisor to the Fidelity Fund. When running the fund, Johnson’s objective was to buy stocks with a potential for growth, and not necessarily blue-chip stocks.

Fidelity Investments Operations

Fidelity Investments operates several businesses, with the main ones being mutual funds and brokerage services. The mutual fund division comprises three divisions – equity, high-income, and fixed income divisions. The company operates Fidelity Contrafund, the largest non-indexed mutual fund in the United States, with over $107.4 billion in assets. Fidelity Investments also owns Fidelity Magellan, which was at one time managed by former CEO and President Ned Johnson. Fidelity Magellan manages assets totaling $15.5 billion.
