Job Description

Responsible for supervising the day to day operations of assigned imaging sections. This includes providing direct supervision to assigned staff and overseeing daily operations to ensure that consistent quality patient care and imaging services are provided.

Accountable for the implementation and maintenance of quality assurance programs and regulatory compliance.

Also functions as a staff Ultrasound tech as needed.

Performs diversified ultrasound examinations, operating various ultrasound equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities & Standards

1.0 Schedules patients for exams:

Insures and maintains daily patient flow in an expeditious manner.

Correlates medical history with test required and decides the correct performance of examination(s).

When supplied medical history is not adequate, the technologist will proceed with telephone communication to the physician regarding the exam, patient history, and/or other relevant information required to perform the procedure.

Consults with referring physicians, if necessary, and assists in the scheduling of other pertinent examinations prior to exam, or after the prescribed procedure.

Insures proper scheduling of patient preparation for specific exams per departmental guidelines. The preparation will be discussed or explained to either the patient directly, or referring physicians' office personnel.

Pre-exam responsibilities:

Greet patient courteously within a timely manner of receiving requisition by clerk-receptionist.

Introduce self to patient and instruct patient regarding your role, the exam the patient is having and answer any questions relevant to that exam; establishing and maintaining patient confidence, with less than two legitimate (as determined by supervisor) complaints in a six month period.

Prepare the patient for the examination as per established procedure.

Prepare room and/or equipment per departmental procedure per exam.

Performance of exam and provides care to patients ranging in age from childhood, through adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics. The technologist must possess the ability to assess the requirements of the patients as they pertain to age, and must perform examinations as defined in Department Policies, in a manner consistent with the patient's age.

Assist patient on or off scanning table, following departmental safety guidelines and/or the correct utilization of body mechanics.

Position patient appropriately for adequate scanning, utilizing appropriate restraining devices if required.

Select proper technical factors on individual patient basis with 100% accuracy.

Operate the equipment as directed with proper care to minimize equipment breakdown, and/or delivery of exam.

Practice sterile technique and/or be cognizant of infection control practices at all times as instructed by departmental and hospital infection control precaution guidelines.

Exhibits independent judgment to determine when the anatomy or pathology is optimally visualized and obtains photographic record of diagnostic images for presentation to physicians for interpretation.

Quality control/record keeping:

Maintains appropriate records on all patients as well as statistical data pertinent to operations of Ultrasound Department.

Scans all pertinent information in the form of documents into the Radiology PACS.

Assists in or collects data for quality assurance/risk management studies as directed by the Radiologist or Director of Diagnostic Imaging.

Equipment maintenance surveillance:

Maintain and utilize ultrasound equipment as instructed or for its intended purpose, per departmental guidelines, manufacturers' instructions and departmental procedure manual.

Perform cleaning procedures on ultrasound equipment and/or scanning cot between patient exams as required per departmental and/or hospital infection control guidelines.

Monitors equipment daily for malfunctions, performs routine daily maintenance and recommends repairs when necessary to the chief radiological technologist or manager of diagnostic imaging, so that we may remain in compliance with equipment service contract and to minimize potential accidents (of equipment nature) as required by the departmental safety procedures.

Maintain an adequate stock of pertinent supplies:

Establish needs for daily assignment in assigned room per departmental procedure guidelines.

Notify Director f Diagnostic Imaging of impending supply shortages.

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Good patient care skill and training a must
Able to work independently.
Access to reliable transportation for floating coverage to Satellite ED.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

Education: Minimum Requirement. Accredited 2 year Ultrasound Program
Experience : 1 year preferred
Certification/Licensure: ARDMS within 12 months of hire. Annual BLS. Valid Driver’s license.
Software/Hardware: Meditech and PACS preferred
