THE OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Research and Development is responsible for the definition, management and execution of New Product Programs for the Glucose Monitoring/Management Market with a specific focus on digital product offerings. The responsibilities range from inception of product concept through the R&D phase, product launch and on market support. The Director of Research and Development will be responsible for the business model for selected products within the market segment. This will include the ROI analysis and justification as part of the PMP process and demonstration of product success through P&L reporting. Develop processes and manage the worldwide coordination and integration to drive R&D, Operations, Regulatory, and Commercial activities associated with product development and new product launches. Report product development status and progress to Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) Management. Optimize product development and other ADC organizational launch preparation activities by defining, developing, and monitoring ADC roles and responsibilities culminating in successful, timely launch of quality products. Experience with digital technologies, including mobile (iOS, Android, React Native) and cloud technologies is essential.
WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON
Highly experienced manager responsible for product development activities for the R&D function.
The position may liaise with marketing, sales and actuarial to define a specific line of products for the market.
This position is responsible for providing inputs related to design of product, pricing and other product-related financial indicators that would validate the feasibility of launching the product.
May oversee specific research to determine market requirements.
May be accountable for budget and policy recommendations and medium-term planning.
Integrate customer need, technical capability, and business drivers to propose and drive product strategy.
Balance product cost, performance, and time to market issues across all programs in order to meet R&D Groups goals.
Be responsible for the leadership and management capabilities of the R&D Group. Train and develop staff within the R&D Group. Direct cross function program teams with diverse backgrounds in sales, marketing, quality, development, and operations.
Provide a bridge between operational and commercial activities prior to and culminating in product launch.
Balance ADC resources across multiple development programs in order to meet business needs. Establish processes to assign, evaluate, and report functional area contributions.
Tactical: Lead the program heads in the coordination of all product development launch activities within the R&D Group. Establish product requirements and customer expectations. Articulate product team requirements through formal processes.
Management of the product roll out process from engineering prototype, through beta, pilot, and limited launch, to unlimited launch.
Lead the management of all product market specific configurations through launch.
Develop appropriate product development metrics to communicate status of product development, and improvement of development processes.
Lead the management and coordination of all product launch plans including development, marketing, sales, regulatory, and operations.
Develop and implement the ADC Design Control system in compliance with Corporate and FDA requirements.
Lead the coordination of activities to implement and follow the Design Control system throughout ADC.
Establish and manage the review meetings at various levels, with project teams, functional management representing R&D, Operations, QARA, Marketing, and Commercial areas, and ADC senior staff.
Regulatory: Responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining the quality system including quality policy, planning, the organizational structure to support the quality system, and management review of the quality system to determine its effectiveness.
This position is responsible for the execution of strategic and tactical activities that range from portfolio proposals to launch of new products to meet LRP goals.
It is responsible for the product definition and development, and preparation of all departments for a successful timely launch of a quality product meeting the ADC business and product strategies.
This position balances business need, resources, and program status to prioritize activities and launch sequences worldwide.
This position manages a group of highly experienced professionals. It is responsible for the recruiting, career development, and retention of those individuals.
This position is highly visible and accountable, responsible for leading the group tasked with directing the activities of ADC in new product development and launch. This position works with the additional Directors and Process Manager to define and follow Design Control policy compliant to FDA and business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors Degree
12+ years in product development roles
Direct experience both developing and supervising product development projects and teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with medical device development preferred
If Ph.D degree, 10 years of relevant career experience required with minimum 5 years in medical devices
Demonstrated substantial knowledge of regulations for medical device development (ISO13485, FDA QSR) and/or demonstrated substantial experience in product development for very quality sensitive applications
