Jefferies is seeking a Data Scientist to join the Data Strategy team within Equity Research.

The Team:

Data Strategy is a Global team that supports the Equity Research Department and its Analysts by helping to incorporate alternative data into their research reports, combining the fundamental team’s domain expertise and our team’s technical skills to facilitate actionable analyses. We also interface frequently with third-party data vendors, proactively collaborating to strengthen their products. The team’s focus is on thoughtful, defendable, and actionable processing of large datasets to tell a story about real-world behavior and dynamics; statistics, data engineering, and data science are cornerstones of our work, though we seldom delve into ML/AI, and only as a tool in support of our mandate—make our analysts smarter about their coverage.

The Role:

The focus will be to support the US Research Analysts and the Data Strategy Team’s broader platform. The candidate will use technical and financial skills to implement ideas and requests from the Research Analysts, while also building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, working in collaboration with the rest of the Global Data Strategy Team. This position will report directly to the Head of US Data Strategy.

Responsibilities will include:

Use Python to query, transform, analyze, and combine datasets in support of solving problems and implementing research ideas across sectors and data categories
Enhance our platform through the creation of tools and processes that streamline, scale, and standardize our ability to evaluate, clean, analyze, and disseminate data
Communicate highly technical methods to non-technical stakeholders and translate open-ended questions into data-driven answers
Maintain and build relationships with key internal and external clients, including US research teams, internal sales and trading personnel, third-party data vendors, management, and possibly buy-side clients 

Qualifications

Transferable experience on the sell-side or buy-side, in data science, data research, or similar functions
STEM degree with preference for Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Quantitative Finance, and related disciplines
Strong proficiency with Python; intermediate or better proficiency with SQL and/or Apache Spark
A working knowledge and/or demonstrated interest in fundamental equity research and financial modeling preferred
Experience with cloud computing environments and tools (e.g. AWS, Databricks) a plus
Knowledge of or experience with Atlassian project management tools (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket) a plus
Ability to communicate efficiently and translate ideas with stakeholders across the spectrum of quantitative/data literacy
A passion for extracting insights from large datasets and curiosity about how businesses and industries operate across different sectors
