Litigation Paralegal / Associate Paralegal

Job Description

This is a paralegal position located in Omaha, NE supporting the litigation group with a focus on personal injury and employment related litigation (FELA, grade crossing, tendered cases and third party) as well as FRSA Whistleblower cases working closely with in-house and outside counsel. The paralegal is responsible for a heavy litigated caseload and drafting pleadings and discovery responses to reduce outside counsel spend. The Paralegal is also responsible for identifying and gathering documents responsive to discovery and coordinating with company witnesses. This position is assigned to the Labor and Employment Litigation Team within Union Pacific's Law Department.

Provide substantive case management and advanced paralegal support for litigated matters impacting Union Pacific Railroad.

Accountabilities

Assist in-house and retained counsel in all aspects of litigation management from inception to conclusion, including matter intake, internal and external communication, pleading preparation and review, discovery management, settlement and other case management obligations
Conduct pre-claim investigations and initial case assessments, collect and review records, and create tools to assist with case analyses
Investigate and respond to administrative complaints
Assist in interviewing witnesses and deposition preparation
Draft pleadings, motions and appellate documents and file them with the court
Assist in meet and confer process and draft case specific discovery to plaintiffs and other parties
Perform legal and non-legal research to assist attorneys in establishing UPRR's position and formulation of strategy
Assist in pre-trial and trial preparation. Assist attorneys during trial as required
Perform research pertaining to a range of legal and factual issues
Desire and ability to work in a fast paced environment
Excellent attention to detail
Proactive, solution-oriented approach to identifying and resolving issues

Qualifications

Required

A Bachelor of Arts degree in paralegal studies, or other bachelor's degree in conjunction with paralegal certificate. Will consider equivalent work experience.
Applicable knowledge of motions, discovery, evidence, litigation documentation and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
Proficient computer skills and experience with legal support technology
Excellent customer service skills, time management, project management, and follow-up
Proficient Microsoft Suite skills with a personal injury litigation focus (law firm or corporate law department)

Preferred

5 or more years experience as a Paralegal
