OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

The Principal Scientist of Variant Function Discovery, based in San Diego, leads mechanism of discovery projects that employ innovative technologies for functional characterization of human genetic variants that cause rare diseases or protect from pathogenic phenotypes  (e.g., biochemical & cell based assays, modifier allele assays, enzyme assays, etc).  The Principal Scientist coordinates the Early Target Discovery’s disease associated variants characterization efforts in rare diseases aligned with Takeda’s related Drug Discovery Units. This individual works collaboratively and effectively with internal and external resources in validating targets to build persuasive cases supporting the initiation of drug discovery programs by Takeda Research.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Coordinates the Early Target Discovery’s monogenic disease variant characterization and modifier discovery efforts in broad rare diseases.
Serves as project leader to characterize MOA in general
Identifies opportunities to collaborate with partners (academic, biotech, and CRO) to enhance in-house capabilities. Leads and manages external collaborations effectively
Oversees effective and productive execution of collaborations, consortiums, and other external relationships relating to rare disease genotype-phenotype associations.
Represents own and group research findings to leadership and project teams.
Experimental hands-on experience in some of the following is highly desirable: drug discovery experience, in vitro and molecular pharmacology, functional characterization of novel huamn genetic variants (e.g., amino acid substitutions, truncations, etc.).
Has demonstrated independent thought/creativity in proteins that cause genetic disorders in general and technical proficiency in novel protein variant characterization methodologies

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

PhD degree in a scientific discipline with 6+ years experience , or
MS with 10+ years experience, or
BS with 12+ years experience
4 or more years of Industry experience required
4 years of managerial experience required
