Scope of Position
Research at Corning has created life changing technologies from low loss optical fiber to damage resistant glass and filters to reduce air pollution. We innovate from a deep understanding of emerging applications combined with unparalleled capabilities to design and manufacture novel materials at scale. Our research and development teams enjoy a culture born of science and entrepreneurship. We are seeking optical scientists and engineers looking to use Cornings unique materials to develop active optical systems. Candidates should have experience with optical architecture design, simulation as well as prototyping and testing. This is an opportunity to work with talented interdisciplinary teams that span the globe. This position, Senior Research Scientist, Optical Design, is in the Optical Applications Research group of Cornings Science and Technology Division and located in Sunnyvale, CA. Optical Applications Research works with customers and technology partners to understand the requirements of emerging optical applications and develops novel solutions that can be efficiently manufactured.
Day to Day Responsibilities
Work with customers, partners and team members to determine requirements for new products
Design, simulate, prototype and test optical systems incorporating active and novel optical components.
Collaborate in material and device innovation by linking optical system performance to component characteristics
Invent differentiated components and sub-systems and protect with patents
Investigate new optical technologies and applications and initiate/support research projects to create new industry-changing product categories
Required Education MS or Ph.D. in Optical or Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
Required skills
Demonstrated experience designing and testing actively optimized optical systems
Working knowledge of diffractive optics, spatial light modulators
Knowledge of commercial and custom modeling and design tools (such as Zemax, Code V, Lighttools) including their limitations
Ability to design and build laboratory test systems to verify/troubleshoot system performance Ability to work collaboratively in multifunctional teams spread over multiple locations
Ability to learn new applications quickly and deeply
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Travel Requirements < 20%, domestic and some international travel required
