Working within our Office of the General Counsel, you’ll be part of an organization that collaborates with outside counsel to operate as a global team delivering world-class legal, tax and audit services to client groups throughout the company.
Ford Motor Company’s Office of the General Counsel is seeking an outstanding lawyer to join our Intellectual Property team.
A successful candidate for this position will have a passion for new technology and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with business teams, legal colleagues and outside counsel in the emerging technology and new business space. The candidate will have a broad base of intellectual property experience and the ability to align with the long-term goals of the business and legal office while managing tactical and day-to-day requirements of client teams in time-sensitive situations and fast-paced environments.
What you’ll be able to do:
Work with a diverse group of business teams to lead the development and implementation of IP strategy for our connected services and other new business enterprises
Drive IP engagement with business teams and become a strategic partner for business stakeholders
Lead the negotiation of license and other IP agreements as well as the negotiation of IP terms in M&A and commercial transactions
Develop and implement strategic IP initiatives, policies, best practices and training designed to manage IP risk and maximize business outcome
Work closely with IP colleagues and client teams to capture innovation and drive the development of strategic IP portfolios
Counsel business teams on IP risk and develop mitigation strategies
The minimum requirements we seek:
Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school
Membership in good standing of the Michigan Bar (or member in good standing of another state bar and eligible for RIHC status in Michigan)
USPTO Registration
10+ years of experience practicing as an intellectual property attorney in a law firm or corporation, including experience with patent application preparation and prosecution, infringement analysis and negotiation of licenses and intellectual property terms of commercial transactions

Ability to manage multiple internal stakeholders and balance differing opinions and perspectives
Experience working with start-up, connected services, data or Internet companies

Ford introduced methods for large-scale manufacturing of cars and large-scale management of an industrial workforce using elaborately engineered manufacturing sequences typified by moving assembly lines; by 1914, these methods were known around the world as Fordism. Ford's former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford owned the Swedish automaker Volvo from 1999 to 2010. Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based automaker (behind General Motors) and the fifth-largest in the world (behind Toyota, VW, Hyundai-Kia and General Motors) based on 2015 vehicle production. At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth largest automaker in Europe. The company went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still retain 40 percent voting rights. During the financial crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, it was close to bankruptcy, but it has since returned to profitability. Ford was the eleventh-ranked overall American-based company in the 2018 Fortune 500 list, based on global revenues in 2017 of $156.7 billion.
