Job Description

Position Summary

This is a career engineering position for a civil underground engineer at the Eastman manufacturing site in Kingsport, TN. This position reports through the engineering services and solutions department and evaluates and designs expense work and capital projects for operations, maintenance, and technology. Civil engineers are typically responsible for underground utilities, transportation including railroads, water collection and management systems, standards development, and general facilities maintenance. Career engineers also serve as mentors for new hires within the civil/structural engineering discipline as well as thought partners for others such as mechanical and electrical engineers.

Job Responsibilities

Civil underground engineering and project management

Provide modeling and analysis services and failure investigation for manufacturing partners
Support utilities operations by troubleshooting concerns with underground distribution utilities and improving system reliability, including innovative solutions to underground pipe repairs.
Identify and utilize appropriate municipal codes (IBC, NTSB, ASCE, ACI, etc.) 
Develop, adopt, and maintain corporate and site-specific civil engineering standards 
Lead preparation of construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for capital projects of all sizes from conceptual idea through construction and start-up
Represent Eastman as the subject matter expert on large growth projects

Internal customer interfaces

Develop a strong relationship with internal customers to proactively identify infrastructure problems, develop cost effective recommendations and provide advice regarding civil and transportation issues during preliminary scope efforts
Be flexible to support Eastman manufacturing sites domestically and internationally
structural/architectural team
Split time between fieldwork and desk work with ability to work successfully in a multidiscipline, collaborative, team-oriented and fast-paced environment 
Participate and contribute to the professional development of the civil/

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education:

A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university.
A Professional Engineer Certification or License 

 Experience:

Minimum 5 years of experience, preferably as a practicing civil or municipal engineer
Previous work experience at an industrial manufacturing facility preferred
Proficiency in reading site layout drawings and utilities distribution maps

 
Technical and Interpersonal Skills:

Candidate must be adept at organization / prioritization and be able to simultaneously manage multiple projects
Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Candidate should have experience designing for large capital projects (>$5M) and be able to describe situations where they’ve made sound engineering judgement calls in the field during construction and operation
Candidate should also have experience conducting infrastructure assessments and generating recommendations on minimum required repairs
Candidate must have a desire to proactively integrate into complex engineering projects during early scope development through detailed design and start-up
Candidate should have experience with project scope development and estimation
