What’s the role?

As the Senior Offshore Wind Yield Engineer, you will be a member of the Offshore Wind Business Development team in our Renewables and Energy Solutions business. You will be responsible for providing technical expertise during all stages of offshore wind project development in the specific subjects of wind data management, wind resource modelling, wind turbine layout design, energy assessment, wake modelling and yield optimization with respect to LCOE. Among others, this includes the preparation of data processing, wind energy potential analysis and modelling by means of relevant technical software solutions and risk assessments of technical-contractual issues and results.

Additionally, you have the responsibility for metocean monitoring campaigns and associated data management issues and will also be expected to conduct and communicate the results of desktop studies, such as layout design sensitivity analyses, wind farm performance assessments or other well-defined analytical tasks. 

Moreover, you will have the opportunity to develop and build an innovative team together with the Team Lead. Offshore wind energy assessment experience and expertise is a requirement for this position. More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

First point of contact within offshore wind on all related questions and support for technical expertise in the area of wind data management, wind field modelling, wind turbine layout design, energy yield modelling and yield optimization with respect to LCOE;

Develop an innovative agile energy assessment team;

Develop and manages a consistent approach throughout the offshore wind portfolio on calculations and methodologies. Ensure the right industry standard are applied;

Mentor & coach the yield engineers and support hiring manager with recruitment of new staff in this expertise;

Responsible to implement lessons learnt and strive for continuous improvement and implementation of innovations in energy yield and wake modelling assessments, including Further development and implementation of methods, models, processes and software solutions;

Understand commercial impact and contribute to LCOE tool developments in area of expertise;

Signing off (accountable) where required for the energy yield estimates that will go into the financial model;

Management, processing and provision of wind data (via data and acquisition management), as well as mathematical, statistical analysis and modelling (long-term wind climate, wind energy potential analysis, wind energy forecasting) for the purpose of net yield modelling for projects in different lifecycle phases (due diligence, development, engineering, operations) using industry standard tools;

Development and optimization of wind farm layout designs with focus on LCOE and maximization of yield;

Help to develop a database of meteorological towers and metocean campaigns, tracking data status;

Evaluation of design concepts, technical solutions, inherent risks (in terms of wind yield, energy yield, modelling, uncertainty analysis) and review of third party energy yield assessment reports;

Execution of technical due diligence (wind, statistics, layout, yield, technical losses) in the acquisition and evaluation of wind projects;

Advise Business Opportunity Managers regarding potential project bids;

Maintain productive relationships and work with internal and external stakeholders in various areas of wind resource assessment as needed, coordinating specific tasks from scoping to presenting the results, clearly understanding the intent of the work and helping to shape the task itself;

Continually enhance personal skill set in the field of wind resource assessment;

Develop technical skills in appropriate areas, for example: wind analysis; use of GIS for site design; data acquisition via SCADA;

Develop communication and networking skills needed for business development in the global wind industry;

Manage work priorities to deliver timely results to stakeholders;

Review, application and further development of relevant regulations, standards and best practice, considering lessons learned and insights from Projects and Shell’s R&D department.

What we need from you

We’re keen to hear from high-performing Offshore Wind Yield Analysts who have bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering, Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, Aerodynamics, Aerospace Engineering or another quantitative field. Beyond that, we’d hope to see as many of the following as possible on your CV:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Bachelor’s degree required degree.

Minimum 7 years of experience and expertise in offshore wind resource assessment, wind modelling, energy yield calculation, layout optimization and wind turbine technology required;

Proven track record in quantitative evaluation and experience handling large datasets for analysis;

Expert knowledge using energy assessment software solutions (like Windographer, Windpro, OpenWind, or any other standard wind industry tool/software); Mapping experience is a plus;

Solid experience in numerical modelling and in developing energy assessment standards and providing technical assurance;

Comprehensive knowledge in relevant aspects of wind farm development, engineering, construction and operation of wind farm projects;

Excellent in technical communication, both verbal and written;

Ability to work on detailed problems and address high-level questions;

Ability to link business drivers to deep technical understanding and vice versa;

Strong team player, able to work with a virtual team, whilst also able to act autonomously.
