Primary Purpose of the Position:

Performs tasks and provides services to support the plant's production goals, overall business plans and objectives as directed.

Essential Responsible Areas:

Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.
Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system.
Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots machinery and tooling.  Ensures that parts and tooling are in accordance with instructions, prints, and work orders.  May be required to make drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired.
Proficient in the use of all shop equipment to install, maintain, and troubleshoot machinery and tooling.
Interprets drawings, calculates, and determines indices, tapers, and other dimensions to be used for part(s), working raw materials into finished dimensions with exact tolerances per print.
Performs layout work as required.
Receives tools and paperwork; establishes and maintains logbooks.
Selects, grinds, and adjusts tools ensuring correct speeds and feed rates of tooling for efficient machining.  Ensures that parts and tooling are in accordance to precision requirements for both tolerance and finish.
Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, and grinders.
Performs dismantling, fitting or assembly work required for maintenance of production equipment.
Repairs and maintains all assigned machines and equipment including preventative maintenance.
Performs organizational duties including maintaining an organized and clean work area.
Communicates pertinent information to next shift.
Performs clean-up, painting, and housekeeping duties.
Performs welding and heat treating as needed.
May monitor supply conditions and informs management as necessary.
May provide support for plant facilities maintenance.
Initiates, reviews, and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility.
Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the division, the group, and the company.  Includes ability to handle stress and to interact with others so as to establish and maintain a positive and productive work environment and minimize personal conflicts.
Required to work assigned schedule or 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, working hours/days may vary as specified by management.  Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed by management.
Regular and predictable attendance is required between the assigned start and end times of work.
Performs duties without posing a direct threat to anyone or to property.  Direct threat is defined as a significant risk of substantial harm that cannot be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level by reasonable accommodation.
Assures and maintains safe and healthful working conditions while enforcing safety rules and regulations.
Works under general supervision within parameters set by management.
Communication.  Ability to communicate effectively, write effectively, read, comprehend, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions.
Ability to meet the knowledge, skills, abilities, physical requirements, and working conditions set forth in this position description and on the attached Physical Demands Assessment.
Communicates with the emergency coordinator (EC) or Environmental Focal Point/Environmental Manager (EFP/EM) regarding environmental management activities.
Understands and responds effectively to EC directions during emergencies by being familiar with emergency procedures, equipment, and systems as necessary.  Implements contingency plan to the level required by position.
Understands, completes, and maintains environmental documentation for which the individual is trained, or as directed by the EC, EFP, or EM (i.e., inspections, labeling, record keeping, maintenance of equipment, etc.).  Reports to the EC, EFPs, or EM on the status of assigned responsibilities.
Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation through prudent use of materials, proper disposal and segregation as directed during training or by the EC, EFP/EM.  Understands and practices proper accumulation and storage requirements for wastes.
Complies with environmental regulations when using, dispensing, or handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials and wastes.

Position Requirement & Competencies:

High School Diploma or education equivalent required.
Job related experience for 3-5 years minimum.
Working knowledge of the following areas:  standard machine shop practices, metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, and brazing; all assigned equipment.
Required on-the-job and classroom training.
Ability to apply intensive and diversified evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Must be able to handle sensitive related and proprietary information in a confidential manner.
Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.
Must follow company policies, procedures, practices, and standards of conduct as outlined in the Ball Corporation manuals.
Maintains an awareness of and complies with hazardous waste management and other environmental management requirements in the workplace by attending scheduled training sessions.
Thorough understanding of the operating principles of all assigned equipment.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of grinders, lathes, drill presses, precision measuring tools, blueprint reading and other machine shop equipment, and working to tolerances of + .000050.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to operate and functionally use a computer.
Must be able to organize, plan, and prioritize.

This position is exposed to occupational hazards, including but not limited to, high noise levels, physical obstacles, exposure to chemicals, etc.

What will you be responsible for?

Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure work environment.  This includes correcting unsafe acts/conditions, facilitating monthly safety meetings, performing monthly safety inspections, and investigating accidents, as required.
Supports development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the food safety system.
Responsible for maintaining process quality in accordance with Ball Packaging Operations process and quality standards.
Serves as the facilitator (in charge) of the plant during designated period(s) of time as directed by management.
Responsible for leading the team’s performance and achievement of plant operational targets set forth by management.
Responsible for onboarding new team members, and ensuring technical training and leadership development of direct reports is administered.
Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the division, the group, and the company.  Includes ability to handle stress and to interact with others so as to establish and maintain a positive and productive work environment and minimize personal conflicts.
Provides administration and supervision of the plant production function as directed.
Provides for and reviews the performance and personal development of all subordinates on an individual basis.
Arranges for on-the-job training and development of subordinates' skills to ensure a continued high level of production and morale.
Provides production, spoilage, and maintenance records and maintains subordinates' attendance, evaluation and other appropriate records.
Schedules subordinates' vacations, overtime, holidays, and job assignments.
Provides communications and dissemination of information between crew operations.
Initiates, reviews, masters, and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility.
While the regular working cycle of this position is usually 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday, working hours may vary as specified by management.  Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed by management.

What are we looking for?

Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college degree level education or work-related experience in the can or end making process. HS Diploma/Equivalency required.
Minimum of 3 years’ job related experience
Must be able to handle sensitive related and proprietary information in a confidential manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of the following areas:  business principles, legal practices, product specifications and mechanics of equipment, Ball Packaging Operations quality standards, and generally accepted supervisory practices and procedures.
Ability to apply intensive and diversified evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard production techniques, procedures, and criteria.
High Speed Manufacturing experience
