You will:

Set a vision: You will develop and execute strategic and tactical technology plans, including architecture and system design. You will partner with Product leaders to set a roadmap to deliver short term and long term wins that support Ally’s position as a Digital leader.
Drive operational excellence: You will champion engineering and operational excellence, including establishing metrics and processes to provide senior leadership clear visibility into the operational and technical health of Ally applications and engineering practices.
Think big: Internally, this role will inspire the organization to think differently and innovate. You will provide thought leadership and collaborate with colleagues to drive innovation throughout Ally’s operating model.
Hire and develop top talent: The role will manage and grow a lean and multidisciplinary engineering team. You will build out the team, develop leaders and coach software development lifecycle best practices. You will need to excel at hiring as well as developing existing internal technical talent. You will be both a technical leader and people manager.
Collaborate at all levels of the organization: You will collaborate with other parts of the Ally Technology team to produce and support technology solutions for a variety of Ally’s business practices.
Influence product strategy: You will partner closely with the Ally Product senior leadership team to develop a roadmap that balances short term deliverables with long term scalability.
Drive scale: You will lead the software engineering teams managing, building and scaling the technology platform and will focus on driving security, scalability, stability, and reliability. You must understand the demands of managing a 24x7 application at large-scale. This leader must be capable of scaling themselves and their team to meet the ever-increasing demands of a fast-growing digital business.
Prioritize well: This leader must have the ability to easily switch between weighing in on complex engineering details, taking a long-term view of the business, growing and developing the next generation of leadership, and overall operating as a large-scale organization leader. It requires an ability to prioritize work for the direct team and partner teams, establish goals, and focus attention on the most important inputs to drive the desired business outcomes.

The Skills You Bring

7+ years of software engineering experience and a bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education
Expert-level technical skill set, including 8+ years of experience as a generalist working on both the frontend, backend, and anything it takes to solve problems and delight users
7+ years of experience in successful delivery of high-quality production services and systems
7+ years of experience leading technology initiatives that involve multiple engineering teams
5+ years of experience running software on public cloud platforms
5+ years in large scale distributed system designs
Experience delivering software within Digital organizations and Digital scope
Experience managing through disruptive change in a corporate environment
Experience evaluating new trends in technology and adopting as relevant
Thrives on a high level of autonomy, accountability, and responsibility
Has demonstrated experience building and operating software systems at scale
Has managed teams that have shipped and operated critical product infrastructure, particularly cloud infrastructure involving distributed systems
Is a strong collaborator and can work well across an Enterprise
Can rigorously think, factor in tradeoffs, and make hard decisions
Is a passionate self-starter, decisive and able to move with speed to implement ideas
Has a strong track-record of delivering customer facing digital experiences and a genuine enjoyment of learning and diving into the nuts-and-bolts of how things work
Has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and is comfortable presenting to large groups and executive teams
Enjoys obsessing over getting the customer experience right

The company was formerly known as GMAC Inc. and changed its name to Ally Financial Inc. in May 2010. Ally Financial Inc. was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan.
