The Laboratory Technologist performs a variety of functions such as collecting blood and other specimens using aseptic technique. Also, a Laboratory Technologist must accurately test specimens using chemical, bacteriological, serological and immunohematological tests. A Laboratory Technologist is responsible for maintenance of the testing equipment and ensuring that quality control is closely monitored. Technologists are authorized to perform all technical procedures, without direct (immediate) supervision of processing, testing or reporting once orientation has successfully been completed.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Has earned an associate degree in laboratory science or medical Laboratory technology from an accredited institution; and have at least one year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high Complexity testing; or

Achieved a satisfactory grade as a medical technologist in a proficiency examination approved by HHS, and after qualifying as a laboratory technologist has had at least one year of pertinent full-time laboratory experience; or

Has earned a bachelor degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; and have at least one year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.

Responsibilities:

Knowledgeable with the ability to practice and teach Medicare Compliance.

Knowledgeable with the ability to practice and teach CLIA 88 regulations.

Knowledgeable concerning clinic laboratory billing to include CPT codes, ICD codes and billing practices.

Performs blood collection and collection of other specimens using aseptic technique.

Perform all technical procedures, without direct (immediate) supervision.

Performs testing on specimens using chemical, bacteriological, serological and immunohematological methodology.

Responsible for maintenance of the testing equipment and ensuring that quality control is closely monitored.

Meets turnaround time goals for all testing.

Provides exceptional customer service with all customers, internal and external.

Consistently demonstrates consideration and respect to others.

Offers assistance to other lab team members as needed.

Notifies lab administration each time a credit should be issued in order to provide customers with accurate billing.

Uses good interpersonal skills in dealing with co-workers, management and those outside the hospital organization.

Attends and participates in lab meetings.

Participates in CAP on-line competencies and other educational opportunities.

Consistently demonstrates respect and consideration to others.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Standing, sitting, walking, bending (45-90 degree angles) are required.

May require stair climbing.

Reading and writing are required to fulfill the job description.

May be required to lift up to 30 lbs.

Speech, hearing and visual acuity are necessary in order to perform job.

Exposure to blood, body fluids and hazardous wastes is frequent and one must carry out universal precautions according to hospital policy.

May be exposed to injury by irrational and disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases and/or potentially dangerous equipment.

Work involves mental activity.
