OPERATING ENGINEER Pittsburgh Airport

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Plant Manager, this position is responsible for leadership of the operation, monitoring and performance of routine and major maintenance for all equipment located within the Energy Facility. Work performance is reviewed against established targets and objectives. DTE Pittsburgh operates a large scale hot water and chiller plant at Pittsburgh International Airport which heats and cools the terminal complex and aircraft at the gates. Plant equipment includes hot water generators, centrifugal chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, control systems, filters, piping, meters, water treatment systems and 4160 volt and 480 volt electrical systems.

PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Responsible for starting and stopping equipment and adjusting set points in response to changing weather and load conditions. Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner
* Abide by all safety protocol. Wear appropriate arc flash gear and PPE
* Active engagement in plant Safety Committee; recognize, document, and correct plant hazards
* Respond appropriately to upset operating conditions to prevent damage to equipment. Promptly notify the Plant Manager or their designee of any unusual, abnormal or potentially unsafe operating conditions and to take action to mitigate any potentially unsafe condition
* Interface with Airport Authority BAS operator to meet contract deliverables
* Perform routine, planned, and emergency maintenance on all facility equipment
* Maintain a clean and orderly work area ensuring that the area is left in an unobstructed and safe condition following the completion of the job.
* Responsible for the preventative maintenance, cleaning and painting of assigned equipment
* Perform cooling tower water chemistry testing and respond appropriately to any out of spec conditions
* Responsible for monitoring and adding chemicals as required
* Perform basic troubleshooting of equipment as required
* Record equipment operating parameters every 2 hours and log activities; update an electronic operator's log, use data to troubleshoot performance issues
* Understand and track key metrics including boiler efficiency and KWh/ton
* Communicate shift activities with relief person
* Join or continue membership in Union (I.U.O.E. 95)
* Receive vendor deliveries
* Operate fork lift and scissor lift
* Actively participate in Continuous Improvement efforts to achieve targeted goals and metrics to operate the facility efficiently
* Complete work order assignments including safety inspections of tools, ladders, safety, operating equipment,
* Use CMMS to record maintenance actions, order spare parts, track inventory, close-out work orders and enter maintenance information into data base
* Complete various reports, spreadsheets and surveys.
* Assist other employees as required
* Maintain accurate time entry in accordance with company standards
* Provides direction to vendors, contractors and visitors to the plant as needed
* Participate and support the companys safety program, Service Keys, Diversity and Inclusion and Continuous Improvement efforts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A high school diploma or GED, a Stationary Engineer's License, and at least (2) years of plant operations (chilled water, hot water, steam or power plant). Experience should include both operations and maintenance of chillers, hot water generators (boilers), pumps, electrical systems, etc:

* Ability to work with and through others in a workplace of highly engaged professionals
* Willingness to routinely work alone and work seven consecutive 12 hour shifts or alternative schedules
* Ability to recognize, document and correct hazardous conditions (ESIs)
* Hot water boiler & chiller familiarity is desirable
* Experience operating and maintaining plant electrical and control systems, including programmable controllers (PLC) is desirable
* Preferred ability to read and understand one line drawings for electrical and mechanical systems.
* Preferred to perform electrical troubleshooting on medium voltage and low voltage systems
* Basic water chemistry or WWTP experience desired
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, management, vendors, contractors and the customer
* Ability to obtain a City of Pittsburgh Stationary Engineers License (NIULPE)
* Ability to learn complex systems and to react to emergencies using judgment and intuitive skills.
* Computer proficiency required: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), SAP and SharePoint, with desire and willingness to learn new computer systems
* Employees will be represented by the Operating Engineers Union, Local 95

Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
