Job Summary
* This role oversees, directs and provides leadership and technical expertise in one or more following principal functional areas: tax research, preparation of federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns (or the preparation) of non-income tax returns, including federal excise tax, property tax, state excise tax, gross receipt tax, sales tax and consumer tax to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local tax laws.
* Develops and evaluates the effectiveness of tax strategies to ensure that they meet legal requirements and support business objectives.
* May coordinate the quarterly review of tax accruals.
* Meets with federal, state and local government officials regarding appeals and tax settlements and coordinates those efforts with internal legislative affairs and public policy personnel to ensure that those efforts do not conflict with other corporate goals.
* Prepares annual budget and three-year plan including forecasting current and deferred tax liabilities.
* Provides technical support in preparing responses to federal, foreign, state and local tax officials, and regulatory authorities.
* Participates in industry organizations to assist in the development of policy and lobbying efforts for legislative initiatives.
* Assists in assessing impact of proposed legislation and developing and implementing lobbying efforts.
* Manages, staffs, and coordinates assigned work projects, utilizes external consultants, appraisers and legal counsel as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Basic Qualifications:
* 12+ years of relevant experience in the field.
* Note: A partial year of related experience of 6 months or greater will count towards one full year.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Extensive experience in a specialized area of the tax law including, research, income and franchise taxes, property tax, gross receipts tax, sales tax, and federal and state excise tax.
* Proven expertise in federal and state corporate tax compliance, tax research and risk analysis, with industry knowledge and related experience in either electric generation, energy or interstate natural gas transmission and natural gas distribution businesses.
* Previous management experience directing and overseeing diverse groups of tax professionals, with excellent organizational and leadership skills required.
* Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
* Ability to work effectively with various levels of staff.
* Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to influence others to achieve desired results.
* Demonstrated ability to delegate responsibilities and allocate resources to deal with significant workloads and deadlines.
* Ability to analyze and develop short and long term tax strategies and recommendations which contribute positively to the companys bottom-line.
* Expert knowledge of company operations and accounting systems.
* Prior computer systems experience working with tax related software.
