Job Description

The S&T Color Specialist, Lead responsible for the color team in the Harmar laboratory and Little Plant, capable of establishing, planning, managing projects, and responding to development and technical support activities for the marine coatings and protective and high-performance coating's business.

- Ensures color team compliance with company EHS policies.

- Able to lead the assigned work team to achieve the collective and individual objectives of the collaborators.

- Develop leadership and team skills to ensure continuity and sustainability of the color operation.

- Able to solve the multiple requirements that are requested in the area such as substitutions of pigments or colorants due to shortage of the supplier, color adjustments in batches manufactured by the Little Rock or Atlanta plant, prioritize the compliance dates, and negotiate with the different areas the prioritization based on available resources.

- Develop a succession or replacement plan in case of vacations, holidays, illness, and even resignation to ensure always a response to the areas to which we provide technical support.

- Ensure that the color formulas developed in the laboratory work and are reproducible in the plant, distribution centers, and dealers.

- Demonstrates ability to lead multiple color disciplines in addition to color matching (pigment dispersions, customer service, pigment evaluation, color instrumentation, tinting systems, dispensing machines, etc.)

- Working in the laboratory with the work team assigned to the position.

- Recognized as a subject matter expert for applied color science internal to PPG

- Work with the manager in setting SMART project goals, and successfully fulfill the established project timeline.

- Responsible for the design, testing, application, and analysis/evaluation of results that will lead to successful product commercialization.

- Contributes to innovative technical solutions to challenging problems.

- Will also be involved with production scale-up, launches, and maintenance of product line.

- Will assist in manufacturing and field concerns through problem-solving and root cause analysis.

- Presents new color concepts, formula cost reduction, complexity reduction, or process proposals to high-level customer management.

- Finds solutions when few guidelines exist and make decisions independently.

- Responsible for proactive support & deployment of regional Color Strategy

- Presents new color concepts or process proposals to high-level customer management

- Frequent communication with internal and external R&D scientists, product, plant, marketing, and sales managers.

- Ability to influence and lead change in next-generation technologies and portfolios of internal and external R&D labs to provide PPG with an advantaged position. Advises senior management on color strategy.

- Mentors and trains junior colorists in the specific color tools (e.g. Spectrophotometer, Oncolor, Datacolor).

- As group leader additional accountability of leading a team.

- Share ancillary duties such as equipment maintenance and calibration, ordering raw materials, proper disposal of paint waste or raw materials and lab supplies, competitor benchmarking and other testing, and other support duties as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- BA/BS/MS in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.

- Recognized as a subject matter expert for applied color science internal to PPG

FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Knowledge of epoxy, polyurethane, polysiloxane, inorganic zinc silicate, water base products formulating principles is necessary.

- Prior knowledge and experience with protective and marine coating testing procedures, particularly accelerated corrosion resistance testing, is required.

- Able to search and interpret literature and is cognizant of competitor technology and intellectual property.

- Knowledge of the design of experiments principles is desired.

- Recognized as a subject matter expert for applied color science internal to PPG
