Job Description:
Lead a team of program and project management professionals who are assigned to multiple individual programs or projects. Direct reports would include Program Coordinators & Developers, Project Technicians & Technical Specialists. Direct day to day work assignments while coaching, mentoring and setting priorities.
Position requires broad experience in Project Management tools and processes, and ability to: facilitate projects, lead chartering sessions, develop / validate network diagrams, lead integration and compression sessions. Team will be expected to complete complex programs in one or more business sectors and manage programs on time and within budget, while meeting the requirements of the customer.
JOB DUTIES:
This level of leader may have had one or more previous team leader assignments, though first-time managers are common. The incumbents team will be focusing on multiple programs in this assignment. The Manager role accounts for more than 50% of this assignment and the incumbent will have a smaller role of leading programs. As a manager, the individual will first be accountable for the oversight of multiple program and project managers and the programs they are executing. Coach, mentor, and supervise the program coordinators and developers in daily assignments and activities and assure professional program management techniques and tools are used to manage programs and projects. Incumbent will also be knowledgeable and assure the division or department governance processes are followed when necessary (NPI, L-NPI, Etc).
Manager must develop networks and execute a communication strategy to assist the program managers to obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. This network will include Engineering Managers and Division Managers. Key areas of responsibility are: plan and manage the budget for the team; provide a supportive work environment for the team; select, mentor, coach, and develop others. Manager is responsible for all personnel issues and completion of the PMP process for the staff.
Managers must manage own development, continuously learning through experience, interpersonal and leadership skills, and understanding the customers needs and application of the process, as well as keeping up with technology. Incumbent will facilitate and lead process improvement initiatives related to project management processes.
The Manager will interact with people from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds. Incumbent will work with own team and with contractors, hourly, salaried and management employees, suppliers, customers, and individuals working in many Caterpillar organizations. Acknowledging and raising awareness of trade-offs between time, resources and quality, and raising the customers and managements awareness of those trade- offs is essential. Understanding and defining benefits of project or program to the customer is crucial.
Basic Qualifications:
University degree
9+ years of job related work experience

Experience with leading large project management and with project management software
Good human relations skills are required to develop a cooperative work relationship with others inside and outside the department
