Come invent the future. Join The Display Systems Research (DSR) group at Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL Research), whose work spans new VR headset concepts, new types of computational displays, complex experimental systems, and AI-driven graphics. Partner with research scientists, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and software engineers to build cutting-edge prototypes and create the AR/VR technology that will bring people together across the globe. We welcome PhD students in computer science, optics, electrical engineering, applied physics or similar, with experience in optical design, computational cameras and displays, and diffractive imaging. Our internships are sixteen (16) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Intern, Computational Imaging - Optics (PhD) Responsibilities

* Investigate novel systems and components for sensing and display that achieve high performance through a combination of algorithms and optics

* Implement proof-of-concept hardware prototypes that redefine the state-of-the-art in virtual and augmented reality

* Collaborate with scientists and engineers from a variety of technical backgrounds through all stages of project development

* Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in the field of Computer Science, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field

* Experience with geometric optics, physical optics, radiometry and detection, including modeling and simulation

* 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, Mathematica, or similar

* Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

* Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications

* Prior research investigating 3D sensing and displays

* 2+ years experience with optical design, sequential or non-sequential ray-tracing

* 2+ years experience with optical instrumentation, emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping

* Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in journals or at conferences, etc.

* Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship
