Position Summary

Erie Insurance is continuing to hire and is utilizing virtual interviews to ensure the well-being of our candidates and employees. Please note there may be delays in our hiring process.

Handles and/or directs the handling of litigation claims and settles claims within level of authority.

* The candidate must live in Charlotte, NC or Western North Carolina.
* This is a remote, work from home position or the candidate must work from the Charlotte Branch Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Handles assigned claims involving litigation and settles within authority. Reviews and evaluates claims to determine coverage and appropriate handling, exercising independent judgment and discretion in the decision-making process. Directs or conducts additional investigation. Refers to defense counsel or negotiates settlement of litigation claims when appropriate.
* Assists counsel in defense of suits. Assists with discovery, attends depositions, directs further investigation and performs related duties. Makes recommendations regarding litigation when appropriate.
* Reviews assigned claims in consultation with the defense counsel and Claims Examiner when Home Office files are involved. Determines appropriate course of action to resolve claim.
* Attends arbitration, mediation, trial and other court functions as required. Assists defense counsel by evaluating witnesses and testimony to determine whether a claim should be brought to conclusion prior to verdict.
* Conducts and/or assists in the training of all claims handlers.
* Participates in claims litigation audits.
* Monitors utilization of Outside Counsel Guidelines by defense counsel. Assists in managing litigation expenses and ensures that defense counsel adheres to ERIE's billing guidelines. Maintains Recommended Attorneys list and suggests changes or additions based on branch needs.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, required.
* Six to eight years of prior claims handling experience, including litigation activities, or equivalent, required.
* Associate in Claims (AIC) or SCLA designation preferred.
* Appropriate license as required by state.
* Valid driver's license and good driving record required.

Erie Indemnity Company (Indemnity) is a publicly held Pennsylvania business corporation that has been the managing attorney-in-fact for the subscribers (policyholders) at the Erie Insurance Exchange (Exchange) since 1925. The Exchange is a subscriber-owned Pennsylvania-domiciled reciprocal insurer that writes property and casualty insurance. 

Indemnity’s primary function is to perform certain services for the Exchange relating to the sales, underwriting and issuance of policies on behalf of the Exchange. This is done in accordance with a subscriber’s agreement (a limited power of attorney) executed by each subscriber (policyholder), who appoints Indemnity as their common attorney-in-fact to transact business on their behalf and manage the affairs at the Exchange.

The property and casualty and life insurance operations are owned by the Exchange, and Indemnity functions as the management company. Indemnity, the Exchange, and its subsidiaries and affiliates, operate collectively as the “Erie Insurance Group” (The ERIE®).
