Job Details

The Telemetry and Product Intelligence product team is looking for a senior technical manager to join us as we continue our mission of enhancing and supporting our ambitious growth plans. Evolving our products empowers our customers to drive value from their behavioral and product usage data. Product and Behavioral data are two of the most valuable types of data organisations can develop: they enable companies to better understand their customers and prospects, and can be used to power an enormous number of different use cases, including marketing attribution, churn prediction, personalisation, recommendation, and product analytics.

There are a host of technological, organisational and compliance challenges that businesses using product and behavioral data face. For example: privacy regulation and browser tracking prevention measures inhibiting user identification; modeling large amounts of data into actionable insights for different stakeholders; delivering data at low latency for personalization or implementing tracking in ever evolving on-premise products; web and mobile frameworks.

Whilst our platform today empowers our customers and users to better meet these challenges, many of our consumers/customers and users still struggle to bridge the gap between implementing our technology and driving value from their behavioral data. We are looking for a senior technical manager to drive improvements and rigour in our products and platforms so that we can better solve our challenges on behalf of our users and customers.

You will manage a team focused on building and delivering improvements to our Telemetry platform, and its distributed tracing capabilities, while executing within AWS and Snowflake increasing the overall consumability and actionability of our teams output. You will work closely with, and help influence, other engineers, user research, quants, data engineers, teams, and management to define, develop, and deliver using these telemetry platform libraries, web services, data lakes and Warehouses. You will leverage your organization, influence, and demonstrate communication skills to build recommendations to improve our product and processes and align other people and teams with these goals. While innovating for new features and improvements, the team must also ensure the smooth operation of existing systems, balancing resources dynamically between these two priorities.

Some of the other things you will be doing include:

* Lead and support the Telemetry platform engineering team, helping to take the ideas from initial phases to implementation.

* Work closely with product management and refine the requirements

* Collaborate cross-functionally with other product management, user research, user interface, design, and support teams to build a cohesive strategy for Tableaus analytics needs

* Earn the trust of your team, and challenge them to grow

* Lead engineering discussions and mentor others on technical implementation, engineering best practices, and career development

* Work with other leaders in product engineering to leverage and improve our design system and overall architecture

* Know when to lead from the front, and when to step back and let others take the reins

* Collaborating with members of your team and others, bringing together the best ideas and pushing back on the others

* Influence key outcomes around product performance, strategy, and practices

* Play a pivotal role in building and improving our engineering standards, best practices, and rigor

* Provide guidance and support across multiple teams of highly skilled engineers

* Contribute and work towards reshaping our telemetry ecosystem tools, interfaces, and systems into a highly reliable and available service offering

* Advocate on behalf of internal users and solve for their usability concerns in our tooling

* Investigate and research infrastructure tooling issues, resolving the issue and making recommendations for future solutions

* Design and expand on our teams' ability to provide scaled telemetry, distributed tracing, and product / behavioral intelligence solutions to all of Tableau

* Providing technical guidance and contributing to the vision and architecture of Telemetry, distributed tracing, Product Intelligence, and Product Usage Analytics at Tableau

You'll be a great addition to the team if you:

* Are someone who is passionate about platforms and backend engineering, building highly scalable services, have a high sense of ownership, and love to have impact by managing a growing impactful team

* Believe that great engineering management starts with building trust and empathy, and ultimately succeeds by being able to challenge your team's growth and excel

* Believe its important for engineering managers to stay close to technical problems and continue to contribute independently, as time allows

* Have worked in an engineering management or technical leadership role before. Experience mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels

* Come from a strong technical background and have delivered high quality work in a senior engineering position

* Like to work closely with customers to build features and solve problems together

* Consistently make culture choices that positively impact the broader engineering team

* Operate well in the unknown, and enjoy crafting strategy and vision for an evolving team

* Believe that strong alignment around vision leads to a better product and better outcomes

* Have experience with frameworks like Open Telemetry or Zipkin

* Are a Leader: You have software development Lead or management experience, and you have a track record of delivering quality software solutions. You are experienced with Agile development methods, modern DevOps practices and practices of operational excellence for supporting live services

* Are organized: You can balance across priorities, making sure the team is focused on solving the right problems at the right time

* Are a coach: Ability as a coach and mentor providing strategic guidance to the team and partnership across the organization

* Are an excellent communicator. You know what to say and, more importantly, how to say it. You distill complex technical information down to the key elements and communicate both design ideas and technical details effectively

* Are educated and experienced

* B.S., M.S. or higher in Computer Science or related technical field

* 4+ years of experience as manager or team lead.

* 5+ years of experience working in an IC Software Engineering role shipping commercial software products

* 1+ years managing other managers

* Are a Recruiter! Tableau hires company builders and, in this role, you will be asked to be on the constant lookout for the best talent to bring onboard to help us continue to build one of the best companies in the world. You are able to seek out world class engineers, and successfully recruit them to join your cause

* Enjoy working with a world class engineering team, and being given the opportunity to learn and grow
