This position is accountable for providing technical/product solutions to complex problems in the area of general industrial coatings development primarily through new platform development as well as providing timely and accurate support to the regional Sales and Technical teams, and active participation in the resolution of various issues. This position functions with limited supervision and can independently design experiments with limited to no review. The position is focused on development of new product platforms and is based in the VAST Minneapolis worksite. Duties involve formulation, application, testing, and analyses of new and existing coating products. Responsibilities may include designing experiments, selecting project materials, performing independent short-term and long-term projects, preparing test batches.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

* Able to follow a logical progression of experiments to help develop new coatings platforms.
* Develops reports and documents detailing project processes, results, and conclusions; recommends additional actions or research.
* Able to communicate well and share technical results with team members
* Performs analyses, tests, and development of new or updated formulas using sound design methodologies that require specialized understanding of coatings chemistry, application, and product lines.
* Develops and modifies product formulas and conducts or oversees the preparation of test batches and production scale formulas.
* Responds to complex questions and concerns from plants, research technicians, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development, applications, quality assurance, and related programs and services.
* Interprets and applies department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations; ensures compliance with these areas.
* Manages projects to ensure daily tasks and project objectives are completed.
* Will travel to customer and production locations primarily across North America to conduct troubleshooting, presenting product information or training other employees or customers.
* May supervise or serve as a lead to technicians or associate level employees
* Resolves complex problems, contributes to the development of new products/processes and maintenance/improvement of existing GI products/processes.
* Generates sound data and conclusions, suggests improvements in testing, processes, product line maintenance.
* Operates under moderate supervision.
* Takes responsibility for ensuring safe operating procedures.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

1. FORMAL EDUCATION:
1. Required:
1. Bachelors Degree in Science with 2 semesters of General Chemistry and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry

2. KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
1. Required:
1. 1 years in industrial chemistry experience
2. Preferred:
1. 5+ years of experience in coatings formulation or similar

3. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis.
* Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis.
* Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
* Must be able to climb and descend stairs.
* Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis.
* May work indoors and outdoors as needed. Exposure to heat up to 120 degrees and cold to 0 degrees.
* Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
* May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required.
* Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone.
* May work in areas where toxic, flammable, and hazardous materials are present.
* Some travel to other locations, meetings and seminars is required.
* Must be able to work in an environment which may include varying amounts of dust and dirt.
* Must be able to able, with or without reasonable accommodations, able to tolerate non-toxic paint odors and wear a respirator as require.
* Must have a valid Drivers License.

4. TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Required:
* Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite
* Prioritizing and assigning work;
* Applying comprehensive professional chemistry principles and practices;
* Performing highly technical formulation tasks;
* Applying application methods and procedures;
* Interpreting and applying department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations;
* Working with quality standards;
* Solving technical problems and recommending solutions;
* Interpreting data and developing reports;
* Prioritizing project tasks;
* Providing and communicating technical information;
* Applying commercialization principles and practices;
* Communicating with co-workers to provide and receive direction.

Travel Requirement: 10%

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment without now or in the future requiring sponsorship for employment.

* Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree AND two semesters of general and organic Chemistry each.
* Must have at least 1 year in industrial chemistry experience
* Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite
