Job Description

Here at FRL Research, we are looking for a skilled and motivated Softgoods Research Developer to join our team, whose mission is to work with a broad range of multidisciplinary research to advance the state of the art for wearable interaction devices. We are specifically looking for a candidate with broad systems-level knowledge in softgoods construction, integration of electronics into soft and flexible systems, and who can work with a team of researchers working in haptic rendering techniques, psyhophysics, and AR/VR specific human-computer-interaction paradigms. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and engineers, and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Softgoods Research Developer Responsibilities

* Frame, scope, plan, and execute multidisciplinary research for wearable interaction devices for AR/VR aligned with broader research strategy

* Work with researchers, designers, engineers, and other roles, to drive softgoods solutions for wearable AR/VR interaction devices

* Connect and drive collaborations with vendors, academic, and industry labs to advance research in relevant areas

* Thrive in a dynamic, ambiguous, and cross-disciplinary environment

Minimum Qualifications

* Masters degree or equivalent industry experience in a field related to wearable devices and textiles, such as industrial design, textile science, polymer and materials science, mechanical engineering

* 4+ years production experience in consumer apparel and/or electronics

* 2+ years experience with novel textile fabrication and electronics integration techniques

* 2+ years experience with lamination, bonding, and/or leatherworking for wearable products

* Track record of leading projects and teams and delivering research or product prototypes in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications

* 2+ years experience working with manufacturing scale textile equipment

* 2+ years experience working on mechanical or electrical research for textiles

* Understanding of the mechanical relationship between the product and the body

* Experience anticipating and articulating the requirements for soft good product (cosmetic, aesthetic, reliability, precision) and lead a team through optimizing the tradespace
