Job Description :
Senior Manager, Digital News Risk
Media organizations face ongoing cyber attacks and information integrity concerns. Cyber risks associated with journalism continue to grow at a time when press freedoms are increasingly challenged around the world. News Corp is not immune from these challenges and requires greater capability to mitigate known, new, and emerging risks.
News Corp runs a global newsroom, employing more than 1,200 journalists across 40+ locations from the Americas to Asia driving a 24/7 news operation. Our journalists are assigned to environments with significant levels of sustained cyber threats by sophisticated cyber adversaries and frequently conduct assignments in high-risk environments or report on digitally sensitive topics and communities. Editors and newsroom leadership engage digital risk on a daily basis through story identification and assignment. Digital security concerns are strongly related to physical security - vulnerabilities can make our staff less safe.
It is imperative we support our people and their journalism by responding to threats that may inhibit their work or make individuals less safe and free; state surveillance, sensitive information or communication exposure, hacking, the exploitation of personal information, and information/media manipulation must all be addressed. Our reporters and editors must be able to confidently, and safely, meet these challenges while also using digital tools and greater knowledge to improve and inform their journalism.
To address these risks, News Corp is seeking someone who understands and believes deeply in excellent journalism and has considerable expertise addressing the digital risks reporters face. This role has a global responsibility which reflects the nature of our news operation and the threat landscape. Similarly, they will need to forge strong working relationships with staff at all levels across The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, and other companies in the News Corp family.
The position will contribute to and considerably improve News Corp's overall security posture. The Senior Manager for Digital News Risk will also focus on real-world issues and drive practical improvement to benefit global news operations by coordinating closely with internal partners. The position will be empowered to highlight issues, develop best practices and implement solutions. Success means transforming our digital risk behaviors supported by an already robust cyber security operation.
Qualifications
* Demonstrated understanding of the overall threat landscape facing journalists/newsrooms as it applies to different environments and adversaries (hacktivist, cybercriminal, nation-states, sub-national entities, etc).
* Strong understanding of key risk management concepts and methods, especially as they apply to information technology, information security, cyber risk best practice and control frameworks.
* Extensive practical experience working with complex end-user digital security issues (secure communication, digital presence/footprint management, device management), information management (sensitive information access and control, information/data manipulation), and information resources (online community research, current and developing misinformation practices) and incident response.
* Working knowledge of security and risk frameworks such as NIST CSF, FAIR, COBIT, CMMI
* Current information security certifications (e.g. CISSP, CISA, CISM, SANS) will be an advantage.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, notably the ability to express complex ideas succinctly.
* A clear history of developing training materials and supporting skill and knowledge advancement in an impactful and engaging manner.
* Ability to understand the diverse needs of those supported with a focus on enabling newsroom goals.
* Successful history of briefing, influencing and winning acceptance for new ways of doing things among senior management, staff and other parties.
* Experience as a journalist or working within an international newsroom and coordinating activities across time zones is highly valued.
Responsibilities
* Collect information and perform assessments and analysis using multiple sources to contextualize threat information and how it may impact Dow Jones and news operations.
* Communicate to decision makers (newsroom staff, non-technical business representatives and management) how digital risks apply to the company, its reporters, specific stories/topics, and different environments. Communication will include recommendations on how risks can be best mitigated. Expertise applied in a holistic, insightful, and with a long-term view of emerging and horizon risks is valued.
* Develop and maintain a dynamic and responsive training program that promotes digital risk and information integrity awareness, addresses the overlap between the digital and physical environment, and promotes critical skills for safe, secure, and exceptional newsgathering.
* Assist staff in the identification of cyber/digital threats and implement solutions to reduce risk by coordinating with a broad range of internal stakeholders and vendors.
* Work across newsrooms within the various Dow Jones publications and with cyber security and technology departments to:
* Develop, or assist in the development of key policies and processes which support the newsroom related to digital risk and cyber security, and inform the safe and secure management and use of technology for News staff.
* Partner with cyber and physical security departments to address digital threats and incidents when they occur - from identification, through management, and to review. Response techniques should be durable, repeatable, and refined over time.
* Partner with cyber security to perform post-incident analysis and forensic reviews when appropriate.
* Advise all levels of the newsroom on specific reporting efforts by addressing unique threats, applying deep domain knowledge and expertise regarding the digital/online environment, information handling, and helping to manage sensitive data and information.
* Work with cyber security partners to ensure effective monitoring of cyber threats as they apply to news operations.
* Stay abreast of security threats, events, technologies, vendors and other aspects of the cyber threat and digital risk landscape. Propose changes or enhancements to our security posture where appropriate.
