Description:
1. Performs a variety of tasks in support of pack and ship operations in accordance with the specific contractual and engineering requirements, ensuring the various components, parts, loose hardware and assemblies are safely delivered to the end user by the required delivery date.
2. Fabricates shipping containers and packaging to protect space flight hardware, multi-million-dollar assemblies, electronic equipment, mechanical hardware and hazardous materials from the environmental conditions encountered during transportation and long-term storage. Containers shall meet the packaging requirements noted in the applicable contract, or in the case of hazardous materials, the applicable Federal or International regulation.
3. Interprets engineering drawings, sketches, process plans, work orders and reference manuals. Determines size and type of container, cushioning thickness, sizes of wood and other materials used in the fabrication of non-standard and specialized crates and boxes when such information is not specified. Applies working knowledge of ASTM Standards and Military Specifications for proper fabrication of commercial and military packaging. Installs any additional container hardware (e.g. rotary latches, handles, lifting rings, etc.) Create and apply any required marking, labeling or stenciling.
4. Determines the method of load securement on dedicated transport equipment and performs any required blocking, bracing, padding and strapping to secure the item in transit.
5. Inspects items to be shipped to identify any issues of concern including but not limited to; existing damage unidentified hazardous materials. Elevates any concerns or issues to area leadership.
6. Applies working knowledge of hazardous material packaging, including explosive and radioactive material. Interprets/follows detailed instructions to assemble the inner packaging, application of absorbent material, closure of the outer package and application of the required making and labeling.
7. Performs packing marking, labeling and bar coding in accordance with MIL-STD 129 as applicable. Obtains Packaging Data Sheet (PDS) for the specific item. Performs heat seal seam test (pull and bubble tests) on MIL SPEC bagging material, when required by contract.
8. Monitors the stock of packing materials, lumber, fasteners, and supplies in the shipping area. Informs supervisor of shortages and replenishes stock in approved areas upon receipt and inspection of procured material.
9. Directs, trains, and instructs new hires and less experienced crater/packers.
Basic Qualifications:
-Ability to lift over 50lbs and work standing the majority of the shift.
