DESCRIPTION
Amazon Technical Academy (ATA) is a training program that equips growth-minded participants with the essential skills needed to transition into and thrive in software engineering career at Amazon. ATA strips away the overly theoretical material offered in a traditional four-year Computer Science program and combines, instructor-led, project-based learning with real-world application, to enable non-technical participants to master widely used software engineering skills and Amazon tools in nine months. Since launching in 2017, ATA has proven to be a source for high performing, diverse SDE I talent. As a result of our success, the program is poised for significant growth in order to train and hire a high volume of SDE I candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.
ATA is looking for a Senior Manager, Software Development who can provide the technical thought leadership and operational excellence to expand ATAs impact. The Sr SDM is responsible for managing both the core tech team and instructional staff needed to scale ATAs offerings. The Sr. SDM will need a unique blend of (a) passion for helping diverse individuals from underserved backgrounds transition into software engineering careers, (b) outside of the box thinking to reinvent the technology required to deliver and optimize high quality training across multiple internal and external partners, and (c) an eye for operational excellence to ensure were appropriately balancing the day-to-day needs of the classroom with the tech investments needed to scale.
Responsibilities include
Manage an experienced team of engineers and technical instructors to develop and deliver technical training to adult learners from underrepresented communities and non-technical backgrounds;
Partner across the technical, product, program management teams to design the long term vision, technical architecture, program strategy and goals for ATA
Drive continuous improvements in architecture extensibility, operational excellence, feature prioritization, and roadmap planning to ensure we maximize product delivery at a high bar for our participants and partner institutions
Drive continuous improvements in curriculum quality and scalability to equip participants to transition into and thrive in software engineering careers.
Foster a dynamic and collaborative development team and classroom community.
Function as the technical escalation point for ATA participants during the program.
Liaise with tech leaders across Amazon and partner institutions to identify opportunities for collaboration and expansion.
Foster the career development of your direct reports.
Act as the voice of the developer for ATA, representing the engineering and instructional staff in leadership meetings and with ATAs advisory board.
A successful candidate will possess an entrepreneurial mindset, including a high tolerance for ambiguity, a penchant for experimentation, and a bias toward action. They will also have a passion for developing technical talent, and will continuously question ongoing assumptions about whats most important for learners. Experience in partnering with product and program management teams
5+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
10+ years of relevant engineering experience
