Job Description

The Portal team builds consumer hardware to advance Facebook's mission of bringing the world closer together. The Portal family of products currently includes Portal and Portal+, home video communications devices designed from the ground up to make it easier for people to connect with their closest friends and family. Facebook's Portal Product Design Engineering Team is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team. Come and learn about our innovative mechanical design and hardware architectures, which help connect people across great distances. The intern/co-op will work closely with System Integration, ID/UX, and Technical Operations (DfX, Reliability, Quality) teams to help design, qualify and optimize our hardware.

Product Design Engineer Intern, Portal Responsibilities

* Help design Facebooks next generation Portal consumer hardware devices

* Interface with System Integration, Camera, Audio, Industrial Design and other mechanical engineers to understand system architecture and design constraints

* Create mechanical design concepts for various products and develop these in 3D CAD

* Devise and execute experiments for mechanical system optimization

* Build and test prototypes of mechanical designs

* Validate hardware according to plan while keeping a thorough procedural record

* Diagnose root-cause of part, assembly or design failures with a hands-on approach

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a BS or MS degree in mechanical or related engineering field

* Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

* Experience in mechanism design, sheet metal and plastic part design, audio/camera/RF integration, design for manufacturing, serviceability, reliability or assembly

* Experience in disassembling and debugging existing designs to come up with better solutions

* Experience with CAD software

* Experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, standard machine tools and equipment

* Experience with simulation software for FEA or thermal analysis

Preferred Qualifications

* Intent to return to full-time degree program after completion of the internship

* Familiarity of basic statistical analysis methods, experience with tools like JMP, Minitab, etc. a plus

* Experience in simulation software for FEA or thermal analysis

* Experience with Siemens NX

* Ability to travel to overseas factory sites (Post COVID)
