Lead Phlebotomist- Lab Support-40 Hrs. / Week- Day Shift Friday-Monday 05:30am-4pm

Phlebotomist - Salary range: $16.37/hr - $24.32/hr. Salary placement is determined based on relevant years of experience in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between St. Elizabeth's Hospital and 1199SEIU.

Shift Differentials: Evenings: $2.50 Nights: $5.00 Weekends: $2.45

I. Position Function:

Responsible for the day to day operations of the section.

Collects and transports routine and time blood requests.

Works collaboratively to monitor phlebotomy status reports for inpatients, outpatients and non-patients.

Performs preventive maintenance checks on label printers.

Interfaces with patients and health care providers to provide phlebotomy services in a timely manner.

II. Job Relationships:

Reports to Lab Support Supervisor

Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with patients and health care providers in the English language.

III. Authority:

Has the authority to collect blood specimens using aseptic techniques by capillary and venipuncture methods.

Calls for assistance to the Lab Support Supervisor, Maintenance or Information Services departments as directed.

Has the authority to use the computer information system to monitor status reports and download collection information from the HandHeld devices.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Trains all new phlebotomists, maintaining current competency checklists.

Coordinates and monitors activities of the phlebotomists on particular shifts.

Distributes work assignments and acts as a liaison between the Laboratory and other Departments.

Has demonstrated advances skills in all areas of specimen collection; including computer expertise for trouble shooting, downloading and printers.

Has the ability to direct specimens to the appropriate departments.

Proficiently handles and uses all procedures and reports associated with the use of HandHeld devices.

Orders supplies and equipment, making recommendations for new material as needed.

Reviews specimen status report at least hourly.

Is able to perform the job description of a phlebotomist.

Finds phlebotomy coverage when needed.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Assists the Lab Support Supervisor as needed.

Performs other duties as required.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Generates Status reports that accurately reflect all phlebotomy activity.

Generates Internal Quality Assurance forms and Incident Reports to document abnormal or unusual issues or encounters.

VI. Accountability:

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related and patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures.

Shall be accountable for the Phlebotomy Team's timeliness of collecting and transporting blood specimens.

Shall be accountable for printing of bar -code labels.

Shall be accountable for resolving and monitoring daily status reports.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

High School graduate or equivalent; science or health courses preferred.

Minimum Experience:

5 years

Minimum skills/abilities:

Ability to follow oral and written instructions, in the English language.

Understand the risk and biohazards of the Laboratory environment.

Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate phlebotomy skills and/ or equipment.
